Navigating the Unknown as a Security Leader

Navigating the Unknown as a Security Leader

A tough-to-address truth in security is that morality only exists on one side of the playing field. Bad actors do not care if a breach causes security leaders to get fired or if an attack causes an entire response team massive stress (in fact, in most cases, they would probably prefer it).?

Bad actors do not care if hospital patients suffer from a ransomware attack. Fortunately, even with bad actors gaining access to new cutting-edge tools, defenders find new ways to combat these adversaries and stay one step ahead of the enemy.

Reframing the Defender Role

Last week at RSA Conference , we saw a panel of luminaries discussed how pressure on CISOs is reaching alarming levels as cybercrime continues to rise. Rubrik CEO Bipul Sinha , Former Director of Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Chris Krebs , and best-selling author of “This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends” Nicole Perlroth broke down the specific reasons why the pressure on CISOs is at an all-time high.

The panel covered a wide range of possible strategies for CISOs to consider moving forward, including developing a framework of shared responsibility between vendors and clients when it comes to securing data, for example, with a software vendor. It’s suggested that vendors may be held liable in the future if they do not make enough of an effort to help their customers secure their data when using their products.?

It’s also important that organizations work on communicating and even over-communicating when necessary, as well as knowing your board and ensuring expectations are clear. Nicole Perlroth also mentions mixing geopolitical factors into threat models when security and IT teams prepare for the inevitable.

Unpacking the Impact of Ransomware on Healthcare

Have an upcoming road trip? Or maybe a day filled with errands or chores? Or maybe you’re just looking for your new favorite podcast? Pop in your headphones or turn on your car stereo and listen to Data Security Decoded, the data security podcast hosted by Head of Rubrik Zero Labs, Steve Stone !

The timing of our latest episode could not be better, as it coincides with the release of Rubrik Zero Labs’ “The State of Data Security: Measuring Your Data’s Risk” report. A big focus of this week’s episode (and a major topic of the new report) is the staggering amount of chaos caused by threat actors for healthcare organizations.?

Hannah Neprash , an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health , joined Steve to discuss how organizations are losing sensitive data in ransomware attacks and how the fallout from these attacks spreads beyond the intended victim.

Healthcare executives must take action before the inevitable attack occurs and secure their data by developing a complete cyber resilience plan. If healthcare organizations choose not to prepare or choose to deprioritize security, the consequences can be severe. PLUS Malaysia’s Journey Towards Cyber Resilience

PLUS Malaysia is a critical piece of Malaysia’s transportation infrastructure, serving over 32 million citizens while linking all major airports, seaports, and towns across Peninsular Malaysia. PLUS facilitates the safe and efficient movement of people and goods, with traffic volumes reaching 1.7 million vehicles daily.?

When a peer organization fell victim to a ransomware attack, it became very apparent to the PLUS Malaysia team that they needed to re-evaluate their cybersecurity posture. An attack could lead to halted traffic, revenue loss, or compromised emergency services; the PLUS team knew they had to take action to keep their services uninterrupted for their customers.

After a thorough evaluation of data security solutions, the PLUS Malaysia team chose Rubrik for its immutability, ease of use, and ability to seamlessly unify protection across hybrid cloud environments. Combined with 16% total cost of ownership savings and advanced threat detection capabilities, it was easy to choose Rubrik for their cyber resilience solution.

Looking towards the future, PLUS is committed to further enhancing its cybersecurity measures, ensuring that it remains ahead of emerging threats and continues to serve as a reliable pillar of Malaysia’s transportation infrastructure.

“As we continue to grow, we wanted a partner that could grow with us,” adds Kang. “With Rubrik protecting our critical IT infrastructure, we are confident we can deliver on the promise to get people where they need to go.”
