A recent report from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) reveals significant skills gaps, with approximately 44% of businesses reporting deficiencies in basic technical areas. Alarmingly, incident management skills gaps have surged from 27% in 2020 to 48% in 2024, underscoring the urgent need for training and upskilling to empower the workforce.
The leaders we speak with emphasise a pressing concern: The lack of understanding surrounding talent attraction and retention processes, particularly in the areas of Immigration and Visa sponsorship. 2. Stringent Visa Requirements: High endorsement thresholds and salary requirements (up to ￡38,700) for visas like the Global Talent and Innovator Founder routes act as barriers for many startups.
Our Advice: Explore alternative visa options, such as Youth Mobility and Graduate visas, which may have fewer restrictions, allowing you to tap into a broader talent pool.
3. Rising Financial Strain: Increased costs associated with visa sponsorship can exceed a 50% increase per worker, putting financial pressure on startups already struggling to secure funding.
Our Advice: Focus on employee development, competitive benefits, and a supportive work environment to keep turnover low and reduce recruitment costs in the long run.
4. Navigating Regulatory Burdens: Complex immigration regulations can overwhelm smaller firms, diverting resources away from innovation and growth.
Our Advice: Partner with immigration experts or legal advisors to streamline compliance and focus on what you do best—building your business!
5. Shifting Perceptions of the UK: Rising costs of living and work-life balance issues are putting strain on all.
Our Advice: Promote your organisation’s commitment to work-life balance, flexible working arrangements, and employee well-being to attract talent looking for a supportive workplace.

Tech talent recruitment in the UK faces significant challenges, but with the right strategies, businesses can excel in attracting and retaining top talent. The DSIT report highlights a 34% increase in cyber security graduates, yet this growth comes alongside a 32% decline in core job postings from 2022 to 2023, reflecting broader economic difficulties. Despite these hurdles, the cyber security sector demonstrates greater resilience than other digital fields, underscoring the need for strategic investments in skills development and talent acquisition to build a more capable workforce for the future.?
