Dear LinkedIn community,
I hope this post finds you well as we navigate the twists and turns of our twenties. Over the past eight weeks, I've had the privilege of facilitating a workshop on running a lean business within the township economy. This experience has been enlightening and has prompted me to reflect on some of the assumptions I held about businesses in these vibrant and dynamic spaces.
One significant highlight during this period was my visit to Sikis Koffee in Khayelitsha with Fred Roed and Palesa Moeletsi, MBA . Sikis Koffee Kafe is owned by the inspiring Sikelela Dibela . Siki’s Koffee Kafe is not just a coffee shop; it's an active social hub for entrepreneurs, creatives, and coffee enthusiasts nestled in the heart of the neighborhood. What struck me was its unique setting inside Siki's mother's garage, a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness thriving in township businesses.
Siki's Coffee introduces high-quality African coffee to the township of Khayelitsha and beyond. The blend, a well-balanced combination of beans from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Burundi, reflects a strong African coffee ethos. Beyond serving exceptional coffee, Siki's Coffee is a community-driven enterprise, fostering connections and collaborations among local talents.
I also had the pleasure of diving into a high-intensity functional training session at Ekasi Dynamik Fitness, a local gym in Khayelitsha. Owners Sibusiso Dlule and Leona Mbobosi welcomed me with warmth and enthusiasm. The 45-minute session not only challenged me physically but also highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit within the fitness industry in townships.
What stood out was the use of technology in their business model. I booked my session through the Octiv fitness app, a seamless experience that resonated with the digital habits many of us are accustomed to. The drop-in fee of R50 for a high-quality workout was not just an investment in my health but also a testament to the accessibility of fitness services within the township economy.
Reflecting on these experiences, it's clear that there's a thriving ecosystem of innovation, resilience, and community in our local businesses, especially within the township economy. As we navigate our twenties, let's challenge our assumptions and actively support these enterprises that contribute not only to economic growth but also to the rich tapestry of our communities.
