Navigating Transparency

Striking the Balance Between Personal and Professional on LinkedIn

LinkedIn, does it blur the line between personal and professional lives? It's challenging to decide how much personal information to share on LinkedIn. Although transparency is essential, sharing personal information can be tricky.

Here are some of my thoughts on navigating this balance effectively.? Would love to hear if you want to add anything further:

  • Know Your Audience: Consider your professional network's expectations and interests before sharing personal information on LinkedIn.
  • Relevance Matters: Share relevant personal anecdotes or insights to humanise your profile and make it more relatable. For instance, talk about how a personal hobby taught you valuable skills applicable to your career.
  • Maintain Boundaries: Be careful with what you share on LinkedIn. Keep intimate details and inappropriate content for personal platforms like Facebook or Instagram.
  • Authenticity:? This is key to building trust, but oversharing can harm relationships. Ensure shared information adds value.
  • Consider Your Brand: Your LinkedIn profile is an extension of your personal brand. What do you want to be known for professionally? Ensure that your personal posts align with the image you want to portray and the goals you want to achieve in your career.
  • Test the Waters: If you're hesitant about sharing personal content, consider sharing it with a smaller audience first. You can adjust your privacy settings or selectively share content with specific connections to gauge the response before making it public.
  • Professionalism First: Professionalism should be the guiding principle on LinkedIn. Inject personality and personal glimpses, but don’t overshadow professional accomplishments or detract from credibility.

In conclusion, achieving the right balance between transparency and professionalism on LinkedIn is a personal journey. To do so effectively, you should consider your audience, relevance, boundaries, authenticity, personal brand, and professionalism. Keep in mind that your LinkedIn profile represents you professionally, but it can still showcase the many facets of your personality beyond your resume.

If a brand / business / company has brand vision, focus and or mission statement if should recruit people that will reflect this and almost allow their people to be its brand! Therefore the lines between professional and personal on LinkedIn can be consider blurry.... but are subject to the readers interpretation But I will stand by this all day long "People follow people" and "People buy from people" Personal = Human and humanized brands build trust. Steven Bartlett has 1,956,408?followers, The Social Chain has 30,519 followers I could go on Catherine Clarke but maybe I should just write a book ??
