Navigating Toxic Workplaces

Navigating Toxic Workplaces

What can be a breeding ground for negativity, stress and conflict? A toxic workplace.

It is where employees struggle to thrive due to stress, unethical behavior, disrespect, or exclusion. Over time, these negative aspects create an unstable atmosphere, significantly impacting work quality. Here are common signs of a toxic workplace:-

From the employee's perspective:-

Poor Work-Life Balance: Employees feel overworked and lack boundaries, often working long hours without breaks.

Unfair Treatment: Workers feel they are treated unfairly on workload, opportunities, or recognition.

Bullying, Harassment, and Discrimination: Any form of mistreatment that creates a hostile environment damaging to mental well-being.

Ignoring Employee Satisfaction: Toxic workplaces disregard employee satisfaction, leading to lower commitment and performance.

Poor Managers: Employees may experience ineffective or abusive management practices including micro management or favoritism, contributing to a toxic work environment.?

From the employer's perspective:-

Understanding Company Goals: Lack of clarity on objectives, goals and mission creates confusion and doubts that leads to a negative work atmosphere.

Lack of Trust: Distrust among colleagues or between employees and management undermines teamwork. Thus affecting efficiency, productivity and overall performance that puts everyone in a pickle.

Unrealistic Expectations: Wanting and needing more than what a business is able to achieve or to give creates unnecessary tension. Thus leading to misinformation out of discontentment.

While many choose to leave a toxic workplace, there are still some who choose to stay. One of the reasons include the fear of uncertainty of finding another job especially in today's competitive world. Another reason being some employees or employers feel a strong sense of loyalty to their colleagues feeling that abandoning them is not an option. Others may stay because they truly believe they are doing the good work that benefits thousands of people everyday. They focus on the impact and choose to ignore the environment that surrounds them.

However, employees in a toxic work environment may be nervous to speak their minds, raise concerns or share thoughts because they are afraid of being rejected or reprimanded. So how can employees or employers deal with this? Here are some of the things you can do:-

Focus on What You Can Change: Actively participate in initiatives to improve the culture by proposing solutions and raising concerns constructively.

Set Clear Boundaries: Set boundaries around interactions helps protect individuals from negative influences. This includes avoiding toxic behaviours like gossiping and prioritizing personal well-being.

Recognize and Reward: Always show appreciation for accomplishments, even the smallest thing. Ex: Saying 'thank you' if someone opens the door for you.

Seek Support: Confide in friends and family for advice and objective perspectives on navigating workplace challenges.

A toxic workplace can cultivate an environment rife with negativity, stress and conflict. Recognizing the signs of toxicity is crucial for both employees and employers. By collectively working to combat toxic culture, organizations can create healthier and more supportive environments where everyone can thrive.

As some of you might grapple with the challenge of a toxic workplace, you might wonder, is freedom and flexibility of gig work a preferable option than office life? Can being independent be better than dealing with stress at work? Can gig work be the best solution for you? You won’t know if you’ve never tried. Ultimately, we all seek a positive working environment. By tackling toxicity and promoting respect and well-being, we pave the way for a brighter future.

There should be a union to fight unfair treatments at the workplace especially at AUBMC since unfortunately i used to be an employee there for almost 8 years and had to resign since no support was given whatsoever
