Navigating Tough Job Decisions — Answers From Experts

Hello and happy Q4 in advance!

Welcome to September’s edition of Your Workplace Culture Guide. In our last edition, we introduced OnPeople to you - our podcast for People at work. 4 episodes are out now and they are exactly what the doctor ordered!?

Every episode of OnPeople features a special session - Our Agony Aunt or Uncle segment, where we ask our guests questions from our community at The People Practice. Here is the question from the debut episode and our guests’ response.

Question: I accepted a role and I have been there for one month. Another company I like has finally sent me an offer after a long time of ghosting. What should I do? Do I leave this company for the one I like even though it is obvious that I may not have been the first or even second choice? Please note that both salaries are in the same range.

Babajide Duroshola’s response:

There’s no major benefit in leaving. You’ve already started at your current company and after a month, you’re getting comfortable with the work style and settling into a routine. Now you are thinking of leaving just because the other company seems cooler?

If you had not started at your current company, I would say go for the one you are more passionate about. But since you have already started, and there’s no significant salary increase, it’s worth sticking around. Over time, you’ll likely grow to appreciate certain aspects of your current role.

Take a step back and compare both companies. Which one offers better growth opportunities or a faster route to the top? If one does, then consider that. But if I were in your shoes and there’s nothing particularly compelling about the new offer, I’d stay and continue building your skills where you are. Plus, the fact that your current company is more responsive and moves quicker than the other is telling.

Remember, something happened that caused the other company to ghost you before - there’s a chance they still don’t know exactly who or what they need for the role. You could just be filling a temporary gap, and in three months, you might find yourself out of a job.

We hope this helps someone who is struggling to make a job decision, if you would like to share your experience anonymously and get insight on how to navigate any workplace challenge, send a mail to us on [email protected] we would love to hear from you! What are your thoughts on the Agony Aunts and Uncle’s segment?

Very helpful and insightful too. This advise is genuinely sound. Many ugly situations may have informed the delay of the new offer, and which on the long run may cause a regret if the offer is accepted.
