This blog builds upon the insights shared in the previous installment, "Strategies for Leaders: Hiring and Retaining Millennials in the Modern Workplace ," emphasizing the?significance of comprehending millennials' operational dynamics and their influence on the workforce. Here,?we delve into adapting and incorporating emotional?intelligence into company culture?to engage and empower millennials in the evolving workplace landscape effectively.

Crafting Company Culture with Millennials in Mind

Company culture is critical when it comes to hiring and retaining millennials. Millennials often prioritize workplace environments that align with their values, offer growth opportunities, and foster a sense of community. A positive company culture that values inclusivity, transparency, and employee well-being can attract millennials and increase their job satisfaction. Moreover, a strong culture can enhance retention by creating a work atmosphere where millennials feel connected, engaged, and motivated to contribute their best efforts. Companies prioritizing a positive culture will likely be more successful in recruiting and retaining millennial talent.

As mentioned in?Strategies for Leaders: Hiring and Retaining Millennials in the Modern Workplace , during my research on millennials, I had the privilege of collaborating with Lukas Pesa, an expert researcher specializing in generational differences and workforce trends. Together, we crafted three insightful podcasts exploring the intricacies of millennials' functioning as employees and delving into the pivotal role of company culture in their retention.

Lukas Pesa explains, “I believe emphasis should be placed on building company culture in the coming years because,?over the next decade, the millennial generation will not only be the most represented generation in the workforce –?but the generation that is forced to lead?the workforce. The desire of millennials to work for companies with great?cultures means?the companies that will be the most successful will be the ones that begin to groom their millennial employees to be leaders right now by engaging them in meaningful work in a good corporate culture to make sure they’re ready when it comes time for them to lead.”

The secret is to?embrace emotional intelligence?from the top down. Design a company culture where emotional intelligence enhances the workplace on many levels, ultimately boosting millennial and company productivity. Organizations will be?able to attract?and retain highly engaged millennial employees once emotional?intelligence training is embraced.

Interestingly, an Ipsos 2012 study found that, even though 91% of supervisors agreed that emotional intelligence is essential, 75% of the supervisors needed to be stronger in all four areas of emotional intelligence: Self-awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management.
