Navigating Talent Development in the Age of Generative AI: Skills for Tomorrow's Workforce

In chatting with my daughter, the other day who was looking for advice on what type of career she might progress into as she starts thinking about university (for those of you who know our youngest daughter that was just pure happiness to hear). Regardless of what she chooses to do, we started talking about the impact of technology on future career choices and it got me thinking with the evolution of AI, what does our future learning and even talent development look like?

As the landscape of technology continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, so too does the demand for a workforce equipped with the skills necessary to navigate this new terrain. With the emergence of Generative AI, an amalgamation of AI, Natural Language Processing, and Machine Learning, the need for talent development has taken on a new dimension. Gone are the days when AI was a specialized skill reserved for a select few; today, it now spans cross industries and functions, requiring a broader population to adapt and acquire new competencies.

In the past two decades, we witnessed the birth of new roles at scale and the transformation of existing ones in response to the digital era. From CX/UX Designers to Data Scientists, the rapid evolution and specialization of these roles have reshaped industries. However, with the integration of Generative AI, the talent landscape is set for yet another transformation.

As we look towards the future, it becomes imperative to identify the skills that will be indispensable in navigating this new technological landscape. While traditional technical skills such as coding and data analysis remain relevant, a new set of capabilities emerges:

  1. Creativity and Problem-Solving: As AI takes on more routine tasks, humans will increasingly be required to leverage creativity and critical thinking to solve complex problems and drive innovation.
  2. Communication with Machines: With the rise of Generative AI, the ability to effectively communicate with machines becomes crucial. This entails understanding how to interact with AI systems and leverage their capabilities to enhance productivity and efficiency.
  3. Adaptability and Continuous Learning: In a world where technology evolves rapidly, the ability to adapt and embrace lifelong learning is essential. Professionals must be willing to upskill and reskill to stay abreast of the latest developments in AI and related technologies.
  4. Ethical and Responsible AI Use: With great power comes great responsibility (One of my favourite quotes ??). As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it is imperative that professionals possess a strong ethical framework and understanding of responsible AI use to continuously ensure AI does no harm (don’t believe this is possible? Check out ChaosGPT).

For university students and early learners, the journey begins with AI literacy. Understanding the fundamentals of AI, its applications, and its implications is essential for building a strong foundation. Additionally, students should focus on developing interdisciplinary skills, such as blending technical expertise with creativity and communication.

For those already in the workforce, staying relevant requires a pro-active approach to skill development. This may involve pursuing specialized training in AI-related disciplines, participating in continuous learning programs, or seeking out opportunities to apply AI technologies in their current roles.

There are a lot of online training options available for us to improve our readiness - individuals can start by exploring online courses, workshops, and resources offered by institutions and organizations specializing in AI education. For example, platforms such as Coursera, edX, and Udacity offer a wide range of courses covering various aspects of AI and related technologies, hence making it accessible for individuals at all stages of their learning journey.

We stand at the edge of a new era defined by Generative AI, the need for talent development has never been more pressing. By equipping ourselves with the right skills and mindset, we can navigate this evolving landscape with confidence and drive positive change in the world.

Of course this is one perspective, would love to hear alternastive views as well, what alternative approaches or core skills people should be thinking about to be ready to leverage / partner with AI.

Going forward should we have "AI literacy" as a separate evaluation criteria in any candidate assessment!

I’d love to hear what course she ends up doing Nathan. The future is very different to what we grew up with.
