Navigating a Storm

Spring is upon us, and at our home, that means weather changes.

With temperature swings and barometric pressure changes, it's that time of year when we are keeping on top of meds, diet, and everything else. I shared about these sensory issues in a previous edition of this newsletter.

Now, add on top of this any routine changes, and the stimming just increases exponentially. Stimming isn't always just hand-flapping or clapping, it also may be taking every toy out and throwing them around the room...creating an event of epic proportions on par with an F5 tornado.

This sort of thing is not too uncommon within the autism community, and when managed everything goes well. After all, any day where there isn't any negative behavior where hitting is involved is a win. Picking up some toys, and straightening a messy room is a welcome sight.

The constant reminder here is that these behaviors are both a way for him to self-regulate his sensory issues, as well as a means for him to communicate. The biggest challenge for any parent, or anyone else for that matter, is for us to be able to listen.

Sometimes these moments just need a bit of navigating, and with a bit of patience and understanding... these situations often improve over time.

Isn't that the same in life? We all get a bit stressed out for a variety of reasons. Some days can be a bit much, right? Seems our son has his moments, just like us.

Stay tuned this Friday, when I chat more on this topic.

Cover Photo of the Week

Rather than always use royalty-free stock photos for these newsletters, I'm mixing things up a little with some other photos.

This week is one I took a while back and is available for your home or office.

So,?Click Here?if you like this week's cover photo.

And now, for more!

Sometimes an individual and organization need a bit of a shoutout, as they are making great strides in helping the autism community in some way. Here is this week's highlight:

  1. Anton H?kanson ?- is the founder of DayCape, an app and web platform to support children with autism. The program is making it easier to view?and get reminded of what's needs to be done at a certain time. Also, it enables caretakers to collaborate with helping?to plan the daily structure and more!

If you have a company or individual that needs a shout-out, leave a comment.

Thank you for subscribing and being a part of this journey.

LOVE IT! It is great to let go, let it out. I handle stress by baking and working outside. Nothing like digging, planting, and ...
