Navigating State Governance: My Internship with the Office of Governor Wes Moore

Almost a year ago, I had the distinct privilege of meeting Gov. Wes Moore during his campaign trail. Fast forward, and I find myself reflecting on my time as a member of his first summer internship cohort. The journey between those two points has been transformative.

My Role and Its Impact

Being designated as the operations intern within the Governor's Chief of Staff Office was no small feat. This role involved a diverse range of responsibilities from brief and memo writing to office management, intern coordination, and event planning. Moreover, I had the opportunity to work closely with my mentor, Eddie Hawkins, Jr. , the Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff. His guidance provided me with a holistic understanding of the inner workings of the dynamic Moore-Miller administration. Every day presented a new learning curve and an array of experiences.

Discovering the intricacies of State Government and the noble path of public service made me realize the importance of effective communication in such roles. Managing my fellow interns and overseeing office affairs required efficient and potent communication. The deeper I delved into my tasks, the more I felt a burgeoning passion for public service. I've come to appreciate the immense responsibility that public servants shoulder and their profound influence on the broader community.

In addition to completing my internship work, I also participated in the Maryland Public Service Scholars Programs Fellowship. Through this program, myself and three other interns were tasked to write and present a 25-page policy recommendation to Governor Moore and Lt. Governor Aruna Miller . During the policy-making process, we conducted several interviews and spent hours researching the state's current policies.

Taking Advantage of this Opportunity

To those aspiring state government interns out there: always advocate for yourself. If you yearn for a richer experience, attend more meetings, immerse yourself in work events, and vocalize your aspirations. Such experiences elevate you beyond typical intern duties, offering a panoramic view of life as a state government employee. Such as the time I was able to take part in a Terrapin Release on Poplar Island with the Lt. Governor because I promised myself to take advantage of any events that I may have the opportunity to attend.

Looking Back

Overall, this internship was a combination of personal and professional growth. While it forced me into challenging situations, it was those very challenges that culminated in my most rewarding achievements. It taught me the value of optimism, even when faced with intimidating tasks. My journey with Governor Wes Moore's Office was not just about understanding governance; it was about evolving as an individual, ready to face the world with renewed passion and purpose.
