Crafting a Mantra: The Origin and Significance, and Why Every Speaker Should Embrace One.?
Years ago, I was blessed with the incredible opportunity to sing the lead role in the musical "Mandela." The production was a grand spectacle, and I was tasked with delivering a powerful performance that would leave a lasting impact on the audience. Little did I know that a mishap during a crucial moment would give birth to a mantra that would guide me through many stages to come.
The musical's climax was the final act, where all the actors, singers, and choir members joined together for a resounding finale. As the spotlight shone on me, I danced passionately on stage, fully immersed in the moment. However, fate had other plans.
Amid the performance, my heavy wool wrap-around skirt dropped suddenly, right in the middle of the number, right in front of the audience and even the press. The initial shock was followed by a split-second decision: panic or composure? I remember my heart racing as I screamed, quickly retrieved my skirt, and made a hasty exit to the backstage area.
Standing in the wings, a swirl of thoughts raced through my mind. Should I return to the stage? Should I stay hidden? It was in that moment of uncertainty that a whisper of guidance emerged. It was a voice that urged me to return to the stage and continue despite the embarrassing mishap. So, with my heart still pounding, I mustered the courage to fix my skirt and reenter the spotlight.
As I rejoined the performance, I sang, danced, and poured my heart into the role as if nothing had happened. The audience remained blissfully unaware; my fellow performers stood beside me, and miraculously, even the press did not mention the incident. It was as though the universe had conspired to shield me from the embarrassment.
In the aftermath of that eventful night, as I reflected on the experience, a mantra was born—a personal plea to the divine: "Dear Lord, please, please Hold On To My Skirt in the final number." This seemingly humorous mantra carried a deeper meaning. It symbolized my vulnerability as a performer, my reliance on something beyond myself, and the realization that even in the face of unexpected challenges, I had the capacity to overcome and continue.
From that point forward, my mantra became a silent prayer, a reminder of my humanity and the strength that lies within embracing imperfections. It taught me to navigate unexpected hiccups with grace and determination and to find the courage to step back onto the stage, no matter the circumstances. Through my mantra, I discovered the power of resilience and the beauty of carrying on, even when the spotlight seems momentarily dimmed.
