Understanding Smiling Depression

Smiling depression, also known as hidden or high-functioning depression, is a condition where individuals present a happy and put-together exterior while silently battling intense emotional pain internally.?

Unlike traditional depression, which often manifests as persistent sadness or lack of motivation, smiling depression masks these symptoms behind a smiling face. This makes it difficult for others to recognize and empathize with the hidden struggles of those affected.

This type of depression, with people who hide their inner suffering under a cheerful mask, is known as "smiling depression": when everything seems to be smiling at you, when you put on a cheerful face in front of your nearest and dearest because you know that they wouldn't understand your illness or that you don't want them to worry about you. But it's also because you're afraid of being judged, or you don't want to give in to the fact that you're really unwell. Our daughter has been through this, and her suicide took us by surprise at a time when she seemed to be blossoming, surrounded by many friends and when everything seemed to be going well for her. What could be more destabilising for those close to you than to have missed the pain of someone close to you to such an extent!
