Navigating the Shifting Terrain: Hiring Sales and Business Development Managers in 2023

In the landscape of recruitment, the tides have turned. For the past three years, the pendulum swung decisively in favor of the employee. However, since October 2023, a noticeable shift has occurred in our opinion, tilting the power balance back toward the employer. As we seek equilibrium in this dynamic space, it's crucial to dissect the trials, triumphs, and attributes that define the search for top-tier business development managers.
In the pursuit of a seamless recruitment process, my recent five-week journey to employ a new business development manager for our team commencing in January 2024 has been enlightening. Certain attributes stood out as beacons amidst the search for the perfect fit within our organization.
Positive attributes we sought and found within potential candidates included punctuality—an embodiment of the belief that "on time is late." Those who invested time in researching our company's journey before interviews demonstrated a vested interest in aligning their goals with ours. Moreover, individuals who communicated a desire for long-term growth and exhibited stable work histories resonated deeply with our vision.
Conversely, there were immediate turn-offs in potential candidates. Those with a history of job-hopping, lacking a commitment to tenure, did not align with our values. Additionally, a disproportionate focus on base remuneration rather than uncapped commission clashed with our incentivization structure. The preference for flexible working conditions, including working remotely, stood contrary to our belief in nurturing a vibrant office culture.
The influx of applications was significant but diverged in quality. While 50% lacked the depth we sought, the remaining half showcased exceptional experience and potential. Ultimately, our search culminated in the hiring of an outstanding candidate—one with whom we've cultivated a robust relationship through seven years of supplier-client collaboration.

When asked about their motivation to join our team, the successful candidate highlighted our culture of rewarding excellence, the allure of uncapped commissions, and reasonable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) driving greater income opportunities for their family.
The hiring process, albeit arduous, was ultimately rewarding. It underscored our fortune in never witnessing employee departures but only experiencing growth catalyzed by new additions. It reinforced the importance of not just finding candidates but fostering a culture where success is nurtured and valued.
To wrap it up, the evolution of recruitment dynamics has urged us to adapt and reevaluate our criteria. As we stride toward a balanced equilibrium between employer and employee and business needs, the search for exceptional business development managers serves as a testament to the pivotal role of alignment, culture, and foresight in building thriving teams.
I help companies that have fallen behind in a saturated marketplace increase their profit and regain their market leadership.
