SEO is always changing, and we need to keep up. Recently, I’ve been thinking about the future of SEO, especially with Google’s Generative AI becoming more prominent. This AI gives quick answers to search queries, but what does that mean for our SEO efforts?
The Challenge of Information Searches
It's getting harder to rank for information searches. Google's Generative AI a.k.a Google Ai Overview is built to give fast answers, which is great for users but tough for traditional organic search results.
I came across an article by Matt G. Southern. In it, Tom Capper, Moz’s Senior Search Scientist, said at a conference, "You basically can't play at the top of the funnel." This caught my eye because Google’s AI is changing the game, reducing the visibility of traditional organic results in information searches.
Understanding the SEO Funnel Shift
So, what does this mean for the SEO funnel? In simple terms, it’s a big shift. While the top of the funnel (ToFu) might seem out of reach, there’s still hope in the middle and bottom of the funnel (MoFu and BoFu).
Impact on Top of Funnel (ToFu) SEO
Think of trying to catch rain with a sieve—that’s what it feels like trying to rank for informational searches now. With Google’s AI giving instant answers, users are less likely to click through to websites. This change reduces traffic to sites relying on top-of-funnel content.
Focus on Middle and Bottom of Funnel (MoFu and BoFu)
Here’s where the opportunity lies. Commercial and transactional searches are the new sweet spots for SEO. Users making these searches need detailed information, comparisons, reviews, and assurances before making decisions. This makes the middle and bottom of the funnel perfect for SEO efforts.

While Google’s Generative AI presents challenges for top-of-funnel informational searches, it also opens doors to new opportunities. By focusing on middle and bottom-of-funnel content, enhancing the quality and depth of our offerings, and improving user experience, we can continue to thrive in the evolving SEO landscape.
The key is resilience and adaptability. Just as a seasoned sailor adjusts their sails to navigate through a storm, we too must adjust our strategies to sail smoothly through the changing seas of SEO.
