Navigating the Seas of AmpliAqua?: Ways to Get Involved
It all starts with a context and a need
In recent years, the aquaculture sector has gained considerable prominence as a pivotal industry globally, driven by the escalating demand for protein and a growing emphasis on short supply chains from production to consumption. Within Europe, Portugal stands out as a frontrunner, boasting the highest per capita consumption of fish and aquaculture products. On average, a regular Portuguese inhabitant consumes 56.52kg in a year, which is by far more compared to other countries in Europe, as shown in our infographic below.?
As the global population continues to burgeon, the demand for sustainable seafood sources is escalating, prompting a projected 56% increase in European aquaculture by 2030. In an attempt to respond to these challenges, the AmpliAqua? project has been launched to revolutionise conventional fish farming practices and ensure environmental and health sustainability.
Why learn about Aquaponics and RAS Systems?
Before delving into that question, let's rewind to the roots that brought us to this topic: understanding AmpliAqua?.?
AmpliAqua? is an initiative backed by EEA Grants and EIT Food, and driven by BGI in collaboration with Food4Sustainability, Morefish, Aqualgae and International Development Norway. The project consists of a pre-commercial unit of an aquaponics system to be implemented in Porto da Nazaré (Portugal), aimed at addressing pressing challenges in traditional fish farming methods, with a special focus on environmental and health concerns. At the heart of the initiative is the promotion of aquaponics, a symbiotic system that combines aquaculture with hydroponics. In aquaponics, fish waste serves as a source of nutrients for plant growth, while plants help filter and purify fish water. AmpliAqua? takes advantage of aquaponics to solve the issue of waste produced in aquaculture. By using fish waste raised in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) as nutrients for hydroponic vegetable production, AmpliAqua? promotes a circular approach, minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency. Furthermore, the project seeks to optimize nutrient utilization and digitalize the entire aquaponics process to enhance efficiency and sustainability.?
