Navigating the Sea of Economic Uncertainty: Taking Control of What Matters

As we continue to face ongoing economic uncertainty, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about the future. But the truth is, change is inevitable, and the current state of the economy is just one more example of that. So, how do we deal with it?

First and foremost, it starts with understanding what we can control and what we can't. There's no use worrying about factors outside of our control, like the state of the economy. Instead, focus on what you can control, like your beliefs, attitudes, and actions.

Our beliefs shape our reality, so it's important to believe in your capabilities as a professional as well as your ability to overcome obstacles. Do you believe you are capable and resilient or do you see yourself as a victim of circumstance? A positive belief system can lead to a positive outlook and attitude and help you navigate through tough times.

Speaking of belief systems reminds me of the scene in Disney's "Lion King" where Simba encounters the wise mandrill Rafiki and realizes he has forgotten who he is ( "I thought I knew") and his duties as the legitimate king of Pride Rock. Rafiki encourages Simba to "look harder" within himself to understand who he is and, consequently, what he must do upon learning that truth. In a vision, Simba's father and previous king, Mufasa, reminds him of his obligation to defend and care for his realm. Simba is the future, says Mufasa.

This incident teaches us valuable truths. Like Simba, we may lose our own identity, purpose and belief in our abilities. We may feel lost, confused and preoccupied with external factors beyond our control, yet our prior experiences and the advice of others can help us find our way.

The images of these scenes also emphasize the influence we have on future generations. Like Simba realizes, we each have a responsibility to improve the world and teach others. What we do today, even though relatively small, will have a part in shaping tomorrow's world, therefore we must improve it.

Your belief system shapes your attitude. Attitude is also key. Instead of getting caught up in negativity and fear, see this time of uncertainty as an opportunity to reassess, redirect, and reposition yourself. A positive attitude can lead to new solutions to problems and open up new doors that we never thought were possible.

Finally, if your belief system and attitude are properly aligned, you must take action. Dieter?F. Uchtdorf has said, "In my experience, belief is not so much like a painting we look at and admire...it is more like a plow that we take into the fields and, by the sweat of our brow, create furrows in the earth that accept seeds and bear fruit. Belief is a principle of action. We can talk and think about our plans all we want, but until we take action, nothing will change. Take small, manageable steps towards your goals, and celebrate each small victory along the way. Remember, progress is progress, no matter how small.

In conclusion, let's focus on what we can control and let go of what we can't. Believe in yourself, maintain a positive attitude, and take action toward creating a brighter future. You will have more confidence; you'll be the captain of your own ship, and your world and the future will start to appear brighter than before.
