Navigating Registration, Securing Visas, and Advancing Your Career as a Veterinarian in Australia

Veterinary professionals looking to practice in Australia must adhere to the specific requirements established by the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), as well as the relevant state or territory Veterinary Surgeons Board.

Such boards ensure the maintenance of high standards of practice and continue to meet the needs of the country's diverse animal population.

When registering as a Veterinarian or Veterinary Nurse in Australia, you should contact the veterinary board of the jurisdiction you're planning on relocating to - Veterinary boards typically refer to the Qualifications Generally Recognised document, published by the AVBC.

Visas

The time it takes to process your visa application can vary significantly, ranging from a few hours to several months, or potentially years, based on the visa category you're applying for.

It's crucial to thoroughly research and gather all necessary documentation beforehand to ensure you're 100% prepared for the process.

Documentation

When applying, you'll be asked for several different pieces of documentation and while this can often vary, it is typical that they will ask for the following:

  • Copies of the biographical pages of your passport or travel documents.
  • x1 recent passport-sized photograph (45mm x 35mm) of each person included in the application.
  • Certified copies of birth certificates for you and any other person included in the application.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds, such as personal bank statements, pay slips, or credit card limits.
  • Email address.
  • Completed visa application.
  • Payment of AUD20 (if you are applying online only).

So, what visa should I apply for?

For veterinarians aiming to work in Australia, there are a few main visa options:

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

The TSS visa allows employers to sponsor a skilled worker from overseas to fill a position when they're unable to find a suitable Australian worker.

The application process typically involves three stages:

  • Sponsorship Application: The employer applies to become an approved sponsor.
  • Nomination Application: The employer nominates a position and the occupation.
  • Visa Application: The nominated employee applies for the visa.

When applying for the TSS visa, applicants can go down multiple visa streams such as:

  • Short Term: Enables employers to outsource skilled employees which will allow them to remain in Australia for up to 2 years or in some cases up to 4 years.
  • Medium Term: The same requirements apply; however, this will enable you to stay for a longer period for up to 4 years.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this visa, firstly your occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list determined by the Australian government.

Luckily, veterinary work is classed as a highly sought-after skill, so you're already one step ahead.

Secondly, you must demonstrate that you meet the English language requirements, which usually means achieving a specified minimum score on an approved English language test.

In addition to this, there may be skill requirements or specific qualification/licensing requirements if applicable.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

Please note that this is a point-tested visa, and you must score higher than 65 to gain an invitation to apply for this visa.

The Skilled Independent visa is for skilled workers seeking permanent residency in Australia - it does not require sponsorship by an employer, a state or a family member.

The application process can typically be broken down into five stages:

  • Check Your Eligibility: Ensure your occupation is on the relevant skilled occupation list and assess whether you meet the other eligibility criteria.
  • Skill Assessment: Obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.
  • Submit an EOI: Submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.
  • Receive an Invitation: Wait to receive an invitation to apply for the visa.
  • Apply for the Visa: Once invited, you have 60 days to apply for the visa online.

Eligibility

You must be 45 years or under when invited to apply.

Secondly, you must demonstrate that you meet the English language requirements, which usually means achieving a specified minimum score on an approved English language test.

You must not have any outstanding debts to be made to the Australian government or have arranged to repay any outstanding debts.

In addition to this, there may be skill requirements or specific qualification/licensing requirements if applicable.

Local Taxes

In Australia, personal taxes related to earnings are crucial in funding public services and infrastructure.

Typically, income tax is levied on an individual's earnings, including salaries, wages, benefits and rental income. The individual's income level and personal circumstances indicate the amount of income tax one may pay.

In Australia, income is taxed progressively, with different tax rates corresponding to different income brackets, known as tax bands. For more information on this, please visit our website.
