Navigating Project Management in VUCA environments; Lessons from the book of Nehemiah.

The book of Nehemiah from the Bible provides key lessons for project managers leading in this ever-changing volatile, uncertain complex and ambiguous project environment. The following are some of the take away lessons from the book of Nehemiah;

  • Clarity of Vision amid Uncertainty Nehemiah 2:17-18

Nehemiah was so consumed by a clear vision to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem despite the fact that they way in a war and the future was bleak and uncertain.? He continuously communicated this vision and motivated the people to join him in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem.

Project managers must establish a clear and compelling vision to guide the project team. This will significantly give the project team a sense of direction and purpose particularly when navigating volatile and complex circumstances. The project team members need to understand the project vision in order to align their efforts and stay focused on the overarching project goal in the mix of dire uncertainties.

  • Adaptability and Agility Nehemiah 4:13,16-17

When faced with threats from enemies such as Sanballat and Tobiah, Nehemiah quickly adjusted his strategy by arming and setting guards. This ability to be agile in the midst of constant danger ensures that the project continued despite the volatile conditions facing the project.

Project managers must be flexible enough and adapt quickly when the need arises to unexpected changes. They must be ready to pivot strategies and reorganize resources in response to the changing project environment. Flexibility must also be embraced by project team members by being willing to take up new roles in order to support the ever-evolving project needs.

  • Strong Stakeholder engagement and communication Nehemiah 2:5-8

Nehemiah engaged stakeholders from King Artaxerxes before starting the project. He also kept the people informed and united through out the project which aided with the sustenance of the project team morale. Project managers should as early as possible consistently engage project stakeholders consistently to foster trust and alignment in complex projects.
