Today, a story that goes beyond the professional fa?ade—a tale of personal resilience and its unexpected synergy with data-informed decision making. Join me as we are about to explore the power of resilience, from the depths of rehabilitation to the strategic domain in our daily work.
A Personal Journey of Resilience
In 2022, I faced a life-altering accident that catapulted me into a world of hospitals, rehabilitation and accepting that my life would never be the same (not only mine, but also for my spouse and kids). The road to recovery is still filled with physical and emotional challenges, demanding a resilience I never knew I possessed. From overcoming setbacks to adapting to a new normal, this journey shaped not just my body, but also my mindset.
Resilience isn't just about bouncing back; it's about growing through what you go through. The psychological facets of resilience—maintaining positivity, embracing change, and finding purpose amid adversity—became my compass during the dark hours. Books, therapy, good talks with my family, doctors and physiotherapists (thank you Jeffrey Manasse and Natasja van Gool - Quakernaat )?helped me during my battles and demons. These lessons extend far beyond personal recovery and the renewed resilience is influencing the way I approach challenges in my personal and professional life.
The Role of Data-Informed Decision Making in Professional Resilience
The skills cultivated during my rehabilitation—adaptability, perseverance, endurance and problem-solving—proved surprisingly transferable to the professional landscape. There was no way to stop working, finding the balance between working at home, needing a chauffeur to go the office (thank you Barry Harmsen ), present somewhere, or arrange assistance when traveling was needed. In discovering that resilience developed during this journey, the personal growth seamlessly blended with the demands of another, reshaping my work ethic and approach to challenges and decision-making.
Entering the world of data-informed decision-making is where “resilience meets strategy”. In today's professional landscape, being resilient in decision-making means embracing change, learning from failures, and continuously improving the earlier developed strategies has a direct relation to personal goals. In this case, the main goal is to walk a bit more than I am able now, how I do so by training and other rehab activities is the strategy.
My personal journey in adapting to my new situation, making data-informed decisions (measuring my performance, my growth in simply biking on the home trainer, and walking on the treadmill helped me to continuously make small steps with my physiotherapists.
Discussing opportunities for both personal and professional needs resilience and resilience is crucial in the context of data-informed decision-making for several reasons:
Adaptability to Change:
The data landscape is dynamic, and it constantly evolves. Resilience allows individuals and organizations to adapt to changes in data trends, technologies, and methodologies. Being resilient means staying open to new approaches and adjusting strategies based on the ever-changing data environment.
Learning from your Failures:
Data-informed decision-making involves a learning process. Resilience helps individuals and teams bounce back from failures and setbacks, turning them into valuable learning experiences. Rather than seeing failure as a roadblock, resilient individuals view it as an opportunity for improvement and growth.

Dealing with Uncertainty:
Data often comes with uncertainties, whether it's incomplete information, issues with data quality, unexpected variables, or unforeseen challenges. Resilience enables decision-makers to handle ambiguity and make informed choices even when faced with incomplete or imperfect data. It encourages a proactive mindset, acknowledging that not all data will be perfect, how to solve that, and make decisions on the correct goals that can be measured.
Overcoming Resistance to Change:
Implementing data-informed decision-making may face resistance within an organization. Resilience helps in overcoming this resistance by fostering a mindset that embraces change and innovation. Individuals who are resilient are more likely to champion new data-driven approaches, even in the face of initial skepticism or resistance from others. We love the approach Kotter, that helps us to manage the change more better (see the book “Data Literacy in Practice).
Continuous Improvement:
Resilient individuals are committed to continuous improvement. In the world of data-informed decision-making, this means a commitment to refining analytical processes, enhancing data collection methods, work and develop dashboards and reports that matter, and optimizing decision-making strategies over time. Resilience propels a culture of ongoing improvement and innovation in utilizing data informed decision making effectively.
Navigating Complexity:
Decision-making based on data can be complex, involving multiple variables and factors. Resilience is an invaluable quality for navigating this complexity, enabling individuals to stay focused on goals, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions even in complex situations simply by working together, sharing knowledge and insights with each other, discussing the outcomes, search for causes and the effects of those, embrace the change by adjusting your strategies, at the end you will win!
To summarize
This journey has taught me that the lessons of personal resilience can be formidable assets in the professional arena. Resilience is a keystone for success in data-informed decision-making because it fosters adaptability, learning, and the ability to navigate the uncertainties and complexities inherent in leveraging data for strategic decision-making. Those who are resilient in this context are better equipped to turn challenges into opportunities and drive continuous improvement in their decision-making processes.
