Navigating the Path to Net Zero: Insights from Business Green's Net Zero Festival (Day 1)

This week, I attended BusinessGreen 's Net Zero Festival bringing together experts, thought leaders, and changemakers who all share one overarching goal: to create a sustainable, net-zero future. The festival provided a wealth of insights and engaging discussions, which I am excited to share with you here.

Reflecting on the festival's opening talk by James Murray , Editor-in-Chief of BusinessGreen, it's clear that progress is happening, which we all hope will give policymakers more confidence to embed net-zero objectives into policies more robustly. It is therefore of paramount importance that business leaders play a pivotal role in signaling their commitment to this mission.

The market dynamics are shifting towards net-zero target achievement, marking a positive trend in the business landscape. That said, although the UK is halfway to its net-zero target , global emissions continue to rise, underscoring the urgent need for a profound industrial revolution, policy changes, and substantial investments. Embracing the transition to a net-zero world offers an era-shaping opportunity with a multitude of co-benefits, potentially solving many of the world's pressing problems.

Despite the rising skepticism, Alexandra Scott , Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics Programme Lead at Think Tank E3G highlighted that COP 28 remains a pivotal event on the global stage. This year, it will focus on a global stocktake and continue to explore the loss and damage fund, as well as the necessary shift away from fossil fuels and towards the embrace of the energy transition. The need to move from negotiations to collaborative implementation was emphasized with a strong call for businesses to advocate for net-zero while maintaining transparency in their transition planning.

Mike Biddle , Executive Director for Net Zero at Innovate UK UK, emphasized that while innovation is not the sole solution to achieving net zero, it represents a significant part of the journey. The UK is fortunate to have a robust innovation ecosystem, and the discussions revolved around harnessing these innovations to create a holistic approach to achieving net zero.

The ESG and finance panel with Hans Stegeman , Chief Economist at Triodos Bank , Catherine Howarth OBE . Chief Executive at ShareAction and John Alker , Head of Sustainability at Legal & General Capital stressed the importance of mobilizing finance at scale, recognizing that we are currently investing only a fraction of what is needed for the transition to a net-zero economy.

The discussions emphasized the necessity of credible transition plans and a shift from voluntary to mandatory approaches. There was a clear focus on the need for regulation and transparency within the financial sector , with an understanding of the critical role financial institutions play in supporting transition plans. The moral duty of asset managers to prioritize sustainability over profits was a recurring theme, reflecting the evolving expectations of today's investors.

The discussion on the role of media in the net zero transition, led by Leo Hickman , Director and Editor at Carbon Brief , highlighted how climate change has become entangled in culture wars and has been used as a divisive tool by some journalists. This has raised questions about whether media follows politics or vice versa.

The media's role in exacerbating unhelpful narratives was acknowledged, particularly in today's heightened political atmosphere, emphasizing the need for calm and objective reporting amidst these challenging times. The recent Civitas net-zero scandal raised important questions about media regulation and accountability.

Additionally, the value of contrarian reporting, when presented in good faith, was recognized. It was pointed out that some media outlets have broader agendas that may not align with net-zero goals, underlining the need to surface positive news stories amidst these media challenges.

Business Green's Net Zero Festival served as a platform for thought-provoking discussions and collaborative efforts towards a sustainable future. The key takeaways from Day 1 serve as a powerful reminder that achieving net zero is a shared responsibility, demanding innovation, collaboration, determination, and a dedicated focus on transparency and policy changes.

In your opinion, what role can you or your organisation play in accelerating the journey towards a sustainable, net-zero future?
