Navigating Our Dependency on Technology: A Call for Balanced Skill Development

Before the rise of smartphones, many of us prided ourselves on our ability to remember a long list of phone numbers or perform mental arithmetic without reaching for a calculator. Today, it seems we rely on our smartphones for the simplest of tasks. This dependency extends beyond just smartphones to the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), which has permeated every facet of our lives—from personal assistants like Microsoft's Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT to advanced security operations centers where AI systems like Gemini simplify complex data analysis.

I recently attended the RSA Cybersecurity Conference 2024, where it was evident that AI integration is becoming ubiquitous. Every vendor showcased some form of AI enhancement in their products. These tools are undoubtedly transforming our workflows, reducing workloads dramatically, and making complex tasks more accessible. For example, security analysts no longer need to manually query SIEM systems using complex query languages; they can now interact with these systems in natural language, thanks to AI.

However, this ease comes at a cost. During a recent outage of ChatGPT, I found myself at a standstill, unable to perform tasks I would have managed without a second thought before integrating AI tools into my workflow. This incident was a stark reminder of how reliant I have become on this technology.

As we stand on the brink of advancements in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that promise to surpass human intelligence, the excitement is palpable—but so is the apprehension. What if these sophisticated systems fail, or worse, go rogue? If we become too reliant on AI for our daily functions, we risk losing our fundamental skills, making us vulnerable in times of technological failure.

This brings me to a crucial point: the importance of a balanced skill set. As much as we embrace AI's convenience and efficiency, we must also commit to honing our core skills and maintaining a level of proficiency independent of technology. This balance will ensure that we remain agile and capable, regardless of the state of our tools.

The future beckons with promises of greater technological integration. Let us step into this future not just as users of technology but as skilled professionals who can wield these tools effectively while also thriving without them. Let's prepare ourselves to leverage technology responsibly, ensuring we remain masters of our tools, not the other way around.

You are bang on. GenAI is not going to solve everything. You should always have plan B, which is to switch to solving problems the traditional way whenever GenAI solution fail to perform.
