Navigating Off-Track Remarks: 9 Tactics to Uphold Company Values without Confrontation

In a recent discussion with Geoffrey M. Roche on The Future of Teamwork podcast, Dane ?? Groeneveld and Geoffrey explored the power of questions in aligning team values. Geoffrey emphasized the profound impact of phrases like, "Help me understand why you'd phrase it that way," to foster reflection without accusation.

At HUDDL3 Group , our team is dedicated to fostering an environment of inclusivity and offering avenues for continuous learning and open dialogue. Employees are encouraged to share, articulate feelings, and engage in thought-provoking conversations during training facilitation. However, in any open forum, comments can drift away from our core principles. We've cultivated strategies to gently guide off-track remarks without confrontation to ensure our discussions remain honest and respectful. Below are some of these essential tactics from our team:

  1. Open-Ended Questions: Prompt reflection with questions like "How did you come to that perspective?" or "What's the underlying concern you're expressing?"
  2. The "Value Connection" Technique: Respond with, "That's an interesting point. How does it tie to our value of [specific company value]?"
  3. The "Help Me Understand" Approach: Seek clarity by saying, "Help me understand your viewpoint. How does it relate to our shared objectives?"
  4. The "Ponder Aloud" Strategy: Share thoughts by pondering, "I wonder how that idea correlates with our focus on [specific aspect of the company value]?"
  5. "Shared Concern" Technique: Highlight mutual goals, "We all aim for [a specific outcome]. How does your comment advance that?"
  6. "Considering the Larger Picture": Pose the question, "In light of our core values, how do you envision your comment unfolding?"
  7. The "Potential Repercussion" Question: Gently nudge reflection by asking, "Have you thought about how that perspective could affect [a specific area]?"
  8. The "Hypothetical Scenario" Tactic: Suggest a scenario like, "If we all embraced that idea, what impact do you foresee on our team and outcomes?"
  9. "Values Alignment Check" Method: Realign the discussion by suggesting, "For our discussions to resonate with our principles, how might you rephrase your comment considering our value of [specific company value]?"

Navigating the intricacies of open dialogue on sensitive subjects demands careful consideration and strategy. The nine tactics presented offer actionable steps to guide conversations that may stray from your core principles. For every reader and leader, these strategies provide practical ways to create a space where every voice is valued, and discussions are constructive. As you adopt these methods, you'll find that you're avoiding conflict and actively shaping productive conversations. You can use them to enhance discussions in any setting, ensuring they remain respectful and aligned with shared values. We can experience true growth as individuals and within our communities through genuine dialogue and mutual understanding.

This is a great discussion. I'd like to add the simplicity of this.... There are two simple ways to bring your values to life quickly... 1. Look for where they are already happening. Point them out "You see that there, what you just did...when we talk about (insert value) that's exactly what it looks like in action. Well done. Keep it up!" 2. Bring your values into every conversation. "If we really value (insert value), is this what (insert definition of value) would look like? If not, what should we be doing?" #lead,?#live, and?#love?your values every day.
