The vastness of the ocean serves as a powerful metaphor for the unpredictability of life. Just as the ocean can be tumultuous and fierce on one side while calm and serene on the other, our lives are often characterised by moments of upheaval and pruning coupled with seasons of tranquillity and new growth. It has been said: “Some seasons ask questions, and others answer”. – In navigating the metaphorical waves as captains of our own journey and sojourners of a fate uniquely ours, it is important to maintain mental fortitude and performance by cultivating the mindset that change is an opportunity for growth while seeking the good, the bright, the praiseworthy and the true things of life.
Consider the Indian Ocean, where the southeastern coast of Africa sometimes experiences the wrath of cyclones that can leave a trail of destruction in their wake when tropical storms make landfall, challenging communities to rebuild and adapt! Yet, at other times in the same seas, the waters are calm, and nature seems to move at a more leisurely and delightful pace. This contrast mirrors the dual nature of life, where challenges and calmness coexist across days, weeks, months, and years – teaching us to embrace change and find the strength that comes from within. The lesson is that unpredictability in life and work is a given, and this is often a reminder to cultivate personal resilience in the face of adversity.
Embracing the Winds of Change
Considering nature, climate change has added a new layer of unpredictability to the seasons. The things that once seemed certain and predictable are now subject to rapid change. Just as sailors must constantly adjust their sails to navigate through shifting winds, we, too, must adapt to the changing world around us, being less tied to the familiar – open to what might become if we let go of the need for certainty.
In life, we often find ourselves worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. However, the reality is that we can neither change what has come before nor affix any particular desired outcome to the future. The only thing we have control over is the present – our thoughts, words, actions, and intentions. By focusing on the here and now, we can better equip ourselves to handle whatever challenges come our way, remaining optimistic that all one ought to worry about is today! Anxiety is the enemy. Described differently, anxiety could be said to be the fear of possibility and probability, where we concentrate on attempts to determine the outcome rather than being mindful to enjoy the process.
Courage and Initiative in the Workplace
In the workplace context, if “change” is a regular feature of the nature of your work, try not to procrastinate because you think plans will still change, surrendering to circumstance or the view that someone else will steer the ship – instead, dare to take the initiative and put your ideas forward. Intellectually honest self-respect requires that we be proud of what we managed to achieve, set high standards for ourselves, and take constructive feedback in the spirit of being open to improvement. So, what if the wind’s direction changes? – If you enjoyed the process, improved your skills along the way, found yourself sailing better, and can reflect at the end of the day with pride that you gave your all, honoured your sense of integrity, showed commitment and inspiration in your work – you fulfilled your human calling – goal achieved!
Adapting to a Changing World
Plans change, but do not let that discourage you from letting your arrows fly in the hopes of hitting the targets you set for yourself. The so-called vicissitudes of life – are unceasing. Embracing change allows us to cultivate mental agility, helps inspire creativity, and fosters the resilience of the soul. Stoic philosophy teaches us to focus on what is within our control and to accept what is not. We cannot control the weather of the world or the course of global events, but we can control how we respond to them. By embracing change and practising courage, discipline, wisdom, and justice, we can navigate life's storms with grace and strength – charting the way by leading by example – and becoming the leaders others need.

Agility is the ability to move quickly and easily – an essential attribute in a rapidly changing world. Amid rapid technological advancement, we face global challenges that require our constant and deliberate focus and intentional setting of priorities. When we remain open to new experiences and ways of thinking, we can tap into our creative potential and find innovative solutions to problems. We can also harness the power of the wind, so to speak, by enjoying the excitement of change! The consistent exercise of waking up each day and being committed to iterating and reinventing our approaches to tasks and process flow, always looking for better ways of doing things and more satisfactory and rewarding outcomes – making sure you try to have fun – is another good practice. Change is good for the brain and sustaining creativity because it stimulates new neural connections and perspectives, fostering innovation and adaptability. Our brains remain malleable throughout life – there is no end to learning and growing in life.
Bouncing Back Stronger
Resilience is perhaps the most essential quality we can develop through embracing change! Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity stronger than before. We can build our resilience and emerge from challenges more resilient than ever when we accept that ups and downs are inevitable – but realise too that the future will be, in large part, the result of what we cumulatively think, say, and do each day – it is a universal truth that one reaps what one sows. Like the Jesus parable of the talents, where stewardship of resources led to greater abundance, we are all called to be stewards of the progress we have made, ensuring that we exemplify increase, of which inner growth is the most enduring. This is a strong foundation for achievement – whatever we do, may it sit well with us in what we could humanly do within the parameters of ability, circumstance, and trajectory.
Navigating Life's Storms
Another critical aspect of maintaining mental fortitude is self-care. Just as sailors must take care of their ship, we must take care of ourselves. This means getting enough rest, eating well, and engaging in activities that bring us joy and renewal. It is also essential to cultivate a positive mindset. Instead of focusing on the challenges ahead, try to see them as opportunities for growth and learning. We can maintain our mental fortitude and performance by approaching challenges with a positive and innocent attitude. When it gets too rough, seek support. Just as sailors rely on their crewmates, we, too, can benefit from the support of others. Whether talking to a friend or seeking professional help, reaching out for support can help us navigate rough seas with greater ease, confidence, and freedom. Indeed, a problem shared is a problem halved.
Life is indeed an ocean through which we experience rough and calm seas. By embracing change and focusing on the present moment, we can develop the agility, creativity, and resilience needed to navigate through the challenges with grace and strength. So, let us set sail with confidence, knowing that no matter how stormy the seas may be, we have the power to navigate through them and reach the calm shores that give us respite, to ultimately be proud of achieving the goals we set for ourselves through our daily commitment to their realisation, loving an ever-changing sky.
