The NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) era in college sports has ushered in a new era of opportunity and uncertainty. While athletes now have the freedom to profit from their own brands, the lack of a uniform, nationwide framework has created a complex and sometimes chaotic landscape.

The most significant factor influencing NIL rules is the patchwork of state laws, creating a confusing and often contradictory regulatory environment. These laws vary widely, covering permissible activities, prohibited activities, disclosure requirements, and agent involvement. This patchwork creates significant challenges for both athletes and institutions, with navigating these varying regulations proving confusing and time-consuming.

The NCAA's interim policy aims to provide a baseline of national rules while respecting the autonomy of state laws. However, it has been criticized for its vagueness and inconsistencies.
