Navigating the Next Phase of Generative AI: The Imperative of Control and Ethics in 2024

As I reflect on 2023, it's clear it was a landmark year in the realm of Generative AI. Organisations globally embarked on a journey of discovery, harnessing these technologies in innovative ways. The excitement - and sometimes the hype - was palpable as AI began transforming how we approach problem-solving and creativity.

The Shift to 2024:

As we step into 2024, the focus is shifting from experimental pilot projects to scaling Generative AI applications across various domains. This transition is not just about harnessing AI's potential but also about integrating it seamlessly into daily business operations and customer interactions.

The Need for a Robust Operating Model & Guide Rails:

One critical aspect that stands non-negotiable in this evolution is the development of an operating model that encompasses ethical, legal, and risk considerations. As we scale these applications, it becomes paramount to address the potential added challenges and implications that Generative AI creates. The foundation of a successful and responsible AI implementation lies in establishing firm guide rails. These boundaries are essential to ensure that AI applications operate within a safe, ethical, and legal framework, particularly when they interface directly with consumers.

Case Studies of Uncontrolled Generative AI Usage:

The consequences of neglecting these guide rails are already visible in recent public incidents:

  • A chatbot at a Chevy dealership, in a notable gaffe, recommended a Ford F150, showcasing a lack of brand alignment and contextual understanding in AI applications. Read more.
  • DPD faced a public relations challenge when their AI chatbot used inappropriate language with a customer, highlighting the risks in content moderation and tone management. Read more.

Conclusion:

These examples serve as a cautionary tale. Without robust controls and ethical considerations, such missteps could escalate, leading to more frequent and damaging consequences for brands and consumer trust. The journey of integrating Generative AI into our business practices must be treaded with a heightened sense of responsibility and control. As we embrace the future of AI, we must not forget the importance of steering these advancements with a keen eye on their ethical and societal impacts.

Really great points Conor McGovern. In general, aligning AI with societal and ethical values has been and will continue to be a bumpy ride. The Alignment Problem by Brian Christian is a good read on this.
