What Do Modern Employees Want? ??

The truth is that no matter how much someone loves their job, everyone needs a break from it. The #workforce seems to transform almost overnight, bringing new #priorities and, with them, new demands. Work culture is becoming increasingly prioritized, with work-life balance and flexibility being key factors in employee happiness.

In fact, the idea that one of the variables of personal happiness is work is not new. In 2018, a global happiness measurement scale, The Happiness Index, emerged. However, before this term officially entered dictionaries, the government of Bhutan created the “Gross National Happiness Index” in 1972. The goal was to focus on happiness independent of factors like #financial status, #comfort, or economic growth.

?? For many employees worldwide, happiness often comes down to time off, vacations, and getting away from work. Likely, we all nod in agreement here, but:

  • According to a recent Glassdoor report, employees use only 77% of their annual paid leave.
  • A Timetastic survey found that 61% of employees in the UK did not use all their annual leave in 2023.
  • Less than one-third of American employees took a full week of their annual leave.
  • Mothers of newborns took an average of 10 weeks of maternity leave in 2023.
  • According to a People HR study, the use of annual leave decreased by 7.67% in one year.

Against this backdrop, hundreds of studies indicate that taking leave is crucial for maintaining a #healthy work-life balance and increases employee #productivity by 40%. Employees who do not take their entitled days off are at higher risk of:

  • #Burnout syndrome
  • Stress and anxiety-induced illnesses
  • Lower job satisfaction, leading to higher turnover rates
  • Reduced motivation and productivity
  • Decreased #creativity
  • Increased need for sick leave

Ironically, employees have stopped fully utilizing the #work benefits they fought for, which negatively affects their work. This is why the People #HR report emphasizes the need to create a work culture that encourages and supports the balance between rest and work, as well as greater flexibility in working hours.

Employee Recognition – Why Is It Important?

In today's business world, employee motivation and recognition have emerged as key factors in enhancing performance and productivity, as well as the holistic success of a company. Strategic employee recognition not only fosters workforce cohesion but also leads to higher #engagement and #retention levels. Employee recognition is often associated with practices for their motivation, acknowledgment of their contributions, and skills. Providing both material and non-material rewards highlights the advantages of the job and serves as a form of gratitude for achieved goals and results.

Employee Recognition – Various Impact Aspects

There are numerous aspects of the work process where strategic employee recognition plays a significant role:

  • Job Satisfaction and Engagement: Employees who feel recognized and appreciated are 4.6 times more likely to be highly engaged with their work (Gallup Workplace Report 2022). 68% of HR experts also believe that employee recognition positively impacts their work (SHRM/Workhuman Employee Recognition).
  • Increased Productivity: Employee recognition leads to 14% better job performance (Harvard Business Review, 2016). Companies with successful employee recognition strategies enjoy 12 times better results (Deloitte).
  • Higher Employee Retention: Lack of employee #recognition is a primary reason for quitting (Work Institute Retention Report). More than half of employees would reconsider their plans to leave if their companies provided motivating rewards and recognition (CareerBuilder, 2018).
  • Better Work Culture: Nearly 90% of employees believe that a well-developed employee recognition strategy would contribute to a positive work environment, cohesive team, and high motivation (Quantum Workplace).

The Turbulent HR Landscape in 2024

Are we entering a new era of the workforce? Here’s what the data suggests:

  • According to an Achievers survey, over 50% of employees intend to look for a new job in 2024. 25% of respondents share that they have no specific future plans.
  • An Exploding Topics survey found that 77% of #employers face various challenges in finding #candidates for vacant positions. More than 25% of workers cite a focus on their personal life as the main reason for leaving.
  • According to The HR Director survey, 89% of employers find employee retention more #challenging than in previous years.
  • According to Gallup, only 28% of remote workers claim to have built a sustainable connection with their company’s mission, indicating potential issues in #employee engagement and retention.

All these data points outline a concerning trend towards declining interest in work with proportionately rising expectations. There is no doubt that people are seeking change and no longer wish to work under old conditions. HR professionals must play a key role in initiating changes that meet employee expectations. In other words, they need to assist in creating and developing a stronger-than-ever Employee Value Proposition.
