Navigating the New Era of Commerce: The Rise of 5PL

Last week, I had the privilege of representing Ware2Go at Parcel Forum during a live session where we delved into the nuances of 3PL, 4PL, and the emerging 5PL. In this article, I'll share insights from that session, exploring the evolving landscape of e-commerce, the need for flexible fulfillment, and the defining characteristics of each logistics model.

The Evolving Landscape

Commerce has undergone a fundamental transformation in recent years, leading logistics providers to adapt to meet new supply chain challenges. The rise of omnichannel has disrupted traditional retail, with consumers' shopping habits shifting dramatically. From the COVID-19-induced boom-and-bust patterns to shifts in consumer preferences, the demand for flexible fulfillment options has never been greater.

Why Flexibility?

Flexible fulfillment solutions have become critical due to several key changes in the world of commerce:

1. Rollercoaster of Consumer Demand: The unpredictability of demand has been exemplified by the boom and bust shopping patterns that we saw during and since the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, the demand for standing desks skyrocketed during lockdown and then dropped off, while other industries like apparel saw the opposite. Being able to scale up or down during the boom/bust rollercoaster of demand is crucial to coming out on top.

2. More Complex, Omni-channel Sales Environment: The rise of the omni-channel sales environment means that 89% of consumers comparison shop across two or more marketplaces before making a purchase decision. Because marketplaces are the new marketing muscle for commerce, you need the ability to meet different fulfillment requirements, reallocate inventory seamlessly, and prioritize channels where consumers prefer to shop.

3.? Flexible Resiliency: Nearly half of merchants are seeking more flexible fulfillment solutions. While there's a lot of talk around supply chain visibility, if you have visibility without the ability to take action, it's pointless. Leveraging AI in the supply chain enables you to take action preemptively.

4.? E-commerce Order Patterns & Changing Labor Market: Ecommerce order patterns are changing, as orders have begun to concentrate on weekends and early in the week. That said, Saturday fulfillment is a must-have, and there's a need for the ability to handle varying order sizes efficiently.

5.? Margin/Profitability Prioritization: 79% of merchants reported increased warehousing costs last year, and global rents grew 30% YoY. Rising warehousing costs and the need to achieve profitability sooner emphasize the importance of variable cost logistics solutions.

6. Ability to Test with Lower Risk: Enterprises need the ability to run pilots without disrupting their operations. This is especially important in the rapidly changing e-commerce landscape, where businesses need to be able to test new ideas and approaches quickly with a partner to help mitigate risk.

Defining 3PL, 4PL, & 5PL

To address these needs, understanding the differences between these logistics models is crucial:

  • 3PLs meet you where they are: Traditional 3PL providers own facilities and labor, with limitations based on their network's geography and capabilities. They often require term commitments, offering proprietary technology integration and dedicated resources. 3PLs offer predictability and stability that can be beneficial to some business models.
  • 4PL meet you where their network is: A 4PL connects various 3PLs in a network, offering a consultative approach and more flexible contract structures. 4PLs offer an asset-light, flexible alternative to traditional 3PLs.
  • 5PL meet you where you want to be met: The 5PL is an agnostic, headless supply chain platform that connects all relevant aspects of commerce and the supply chain, from commerce platforms and marketing to manufacturers and freight forwarders.

The Rise of 5PL: Retailers Commercialize Capacity for Co-Warehousing

E-commerce has transformed the retail landscape. Major retailers built their fulfillment capabilities to be so efficient, in fact, that many now find themselves with excess capacity that can be leveraged as an additional revenue stream if they can find brands with the right sales velocity and product profile to integrate into their current work streams.

Ware2Go’s Future of Fulfillment report evidences this need, as it reveals that 90% of emerging brands are open to large retail co-warehousing partnerships, creating significant growth opportunities with access to advanced resources. For retailers, trusted partners with seamless technology integration and high sales volumes are essential, while brands seek technology that easily integrates with existing systems and a "headless supply chain" that connects capabilities across the supply chain.

Commercializing this excess capacity, however, requires a headless supply chain solution that can integrate seamlessly into their tech stack as well as billing and servicing capabilities. Take Ware2Go’s partnership with Gap Inc.’s GPS Platform Services. While Gap allows fast-growing brands to access enterprise-level supply chain capabilities, Ware2Go’s technology enables them to tap into those capabilities without having to invest in a costly, complicated integration point — a truly nimble, asset-light co-warehousing solution.

Navigating the New Era of Commerce

In conclusion, the new era of commerce calls for a new fulfillment model, and the rise of the 5PL presents a transformative solution for the future of fulfillment. With its agnostic, headless platform, extensive partner network, and flexibility, the 5PL is poised to meet the evolving needs of omnichannel commerce and supply chain management.
