Don't say that! Well not like that. Maybe say it like this and add this ...
I find myself having conversations like this with some of the speakers and leaders I mentor.
It's not because I don't want them to be their authentic selves and communicate exactly what they feel but because sometimes what we want to say will not land with the intended effect.
As speakers and leaders we often find ourselves having discussions about topics that are deemed controversial, touchy, sensitive.
The types of conversations that can ruffle feathers or as I like to say "snatch edges."
As we find ourselves increasingly navigating sensitive topics in various settings—from boardrooms to public forums—the ability to discuss these issues thoughtfully is more important than ever.
This skill becomes particularly essential as political rhetoric intensifies with the upcoming election season, making it crucial to engage without alienating or causing collateral damage.
And while we may think it's easier to do so, the key is not to shy away from these topics.
The key is to learn how to navigate them skillfully and that's what I'm going to help you do in this edition.

Now back to how to handle sensitive topics in your presentations.
?? Appetizer: Why This Skill Is Crucial
Discussing sensitive topics is an art that demands tact, especially in today’s diverse environment. Whether it’s politics, social issues, or organizational changes, the way we handle these conversations can significantly impact our leadership and relationships. Developing this skill ensures that you lead discussions with empathy and insight, fostering an atmosphere of trust and open communication.
?? Salad: Anticipate and Address Objections
Imagine you’re about to deliver a presentation that includes potentially sensitive or controversial information. Start by identifying aspects of your topic that might provoke resistance. Understand the concerns and objections your audience might have. By acknowledging these upfront in your speech, you not only display empathy but also position yourself as a thoughtful and considerate leader. This proactive approach helps in disarming potential conflicts and paves the way for a more receptive audience.

?? Entrée: Crafting Your Message
So how do you ensure your message is received positively, without alienating parts of your audience?
Here are some proven strategies to handle this gracefully and masterfully:
?? Anticipate Potential Objections: Before the speech, identify aspects of your topic that might provoke resistance or discomfort. Understand the perspectives and concerns that could arise.
?? Address Objections Upfront: Before or after your raise the sensitive or controversial issue, acknowledge these potential objections openly and transparently. This not only shows empathy but also positions you as thoughtful and considerate.
?? Provide Context: Explain why the sensitive topics are necessary for the discussion. Offer background information that can help frame these issues within a larger, constructive narrative. This release the pressure valve and reduce the audience's resistance. If you skip or botch this step, you will lose some of your audience completely.
?? Use Inclusive Language: Choose words that are respectful and inclusive, minimizing the risk of alienation. This fosters a safer environment for open discussion.
?? Invite Dialogue: Encourage questions and open a channel for feedback. But be prepared for the blowback. The key will be the way you respond. This can help dissipate tension and transform potential confrontation into a productive dialogue.
??Dessert: Speech Diplomacy
Handling sensitive topics in presentations is akin to the work of a diplomatic envoy. Just as a diplomat must navigate complex international terrains with tact and foresight, a speaker must navigate the delicate nuances of sensitive subjects.
Picture yourself as an envoy who carefully crafts each word and phrase to build bridges, not barriers. Your aim is to engage different factions, find common ground, and foster mutual understanding.
Every successful negotiation leaves the parties feeling respected and heard, just as your presentations should leave your audience feeling valued and considered.
?? Check: Your Feedback
It's your turn to pay it forward.

Share your stories or strategies that helped you maintain balance and respect throughout the discussion. Your story may support someone else.

5 个月Thank you for sharing this Kelly Charles-Collins, Esq. - The Speaker Mogul. I'll expand on where you mention diplomacy; as professionals, we need to ensure we find resolution in a communication paradox between diplomacy and frankness. Let me explain. In communicating, if a leader is too frank, they come off as blunt and harsh. While we may have the freedom of speech, it's never free of consequence. Additionally, if a leader is too diplomatic, they run into the potential of not sharing what needs to be said. When we merge frankness with diplomacy, we foster that forthright diplomacy approach, and create the win/win communication style. Thank you for your thought-provoking article. I appreciate you!
