Life can feel overwhelming sometimes, can’t it? With so much going on in the world and in our personal lives, it’s easy to feel like we’re stuck in a constant battle against the tides. I’ve been there myself—2024 has been a year of trials for me, as were many years before it. When life feels like this, it’s crucial to have tools, techniques, and processes to steady yourself and move forward. Without them, the struggle can start to take over.
But here’s a truth the Stoics often emphasised: it’s not about what’s happening “out there.” It’s about how we interpret and respond to those events. When we let our thoughts run wild, imagining worst-case scenarios or obsessing over what we can’t control, we hand over our peace of mind. We lose control of the one thing we truly own—our inner world.
Control What You Can, Let Go of the Rest
The Stoics often reminded us: to focus only on what you can control and let go of everything else. This principle has been a cornerstone in my own journey through challenging times. Why? Because obsessing over what’s outside our control doesn’t change the outcome—it only exhausts us and leads to stress-related problems, both mental and physical.
Think about it. How much time do we waste imagining scenarios that never come to pass? The ancient Stoics even had a name for this practice: premeditatio malorum, or the premeditation of evils. They encouraged us to imagine the worst-case scenario—not to dwell on it but to acknowledge it, accept it, and then let it go. Once we’ve done this, we can shift our focus to what truly matters: solutions, gratitude, and the present moment.
Why Negative Thoughts Exist (and How to Balance Them)
Our minds are wired to anticipate danger. This trait kept our ancestors alive—alert for predators or any sign of a threat. But today, those same survival instincts can turn against us when our minds fixate on imagined dangers or non-urgent problems. Modern life isn’t a jungle filled with tigers, but our thoughts often treat it that way, don’t they?
To counterbalance this, we need to cultivate gratitude. Pause for a moment. Ask yourself:
It might be your job, your family, or even the simple joy of a warm cup of tea. When we actively practice gratitude, we break the cycle of negativity and reconnect with the happiness that already surrounds us.
Three Words to Transform Your Mindset
When life feels chaotic, grounding yourself in simple affirmations can be incredibly powerful. Let’s try a process inspired by Stoic principles and mindfulness. This practice is designed to bring freedom, clarity, and happiness into your life. Here’s how it works:
Repeat these affirmations throughout the day, whenever you feel stress creeping in. They’re a gentle reminder that you always have a choice in how you respond to life’s challenges.
Your Journey to Inner Peace
Ultimately, the Stoic path is about living with intention—choosing where to focus your energy and letting go of what doesn’t serve you. As you practice this, you’ll find that your emotional resilience grows. You’ll face challenges with greater ease and savor life’s moments of joy more fully.
