Navigating the Legal Tech Landscape for In-House Teams and Law Firms

Background?

The Legal Tech market has grown exponentially in recent years with everything from legal document management to CLM, as well as modern workplace solutions such as Microsoft 365 competing for attention. Legal transformation is essential for:

• In-house Legal teams to manage increasing workloads - often with the same budget or less; and?
• Law Firms to better serve their clients, differentiate themselves in the market and increase the bottom line.???

But where does the Legal Sector start with Legal Tech and how do they choose from the scores of opportunities arriving in their inbox every week??

In 2022, I engaged with over 250 lawyers and legal professionals to understand (1) their need for Legal Tech use and process optimisation in the legal sector and (2) the challenges involved in Legal Transformation.?

Insights I gained from this immersive experience:?

• Despite what non-legal folk think, lawyers understand the need for innovative technology and want to use it.?
• However, they are justifiably wary of adoption as the stakes are high for what they do, accuracy is everything and failure is not an option.
• The legal sector is unique, with its own requirements which are not always well understood or served by technology vendors and IT service providers.?
• There are an overwhelming number of technologies out there. It’s a daunting task to understand which solutions are the most appropriate, especially with everyone saying their product is a must-have.?
• Many firms are sold solutions that, however good they are, do not match the functional requirements they require. Or they get the tech but not the support to implement and tailor it for their environment or help with training and user adoption.?
• The failure rate of technologies introduced to firms is high -?77% of in-house lawyers?say they have experienced a failed legal tech project.?

What I also found it there is a lack of specialist legal transformation providers who will:?

1. Understand the unique problem(s) facing the legal team – diagnosis before prescription
2. Advise whether Legal Tech can solve part or whole of the problem?
3. Scan the market and make recommendations for legal tech and non-tech solutions
4. Oversee implementation of the solution and ensure staff are trained to use it?
5. Manage the change process -?ensure the solution is adopted properly by all and delivers the expected returns?
6. Manage the whole process so the legal teams can get on with their day job?
