Navigating Legacies and Mental Health in June
Welcome Back, Brave Journeyers,
As we ride into June, I hope this newsletter finds you well and ready for another month of meaningful exploration. This month is particularly special as we honor Men’s Mental Health Month and reflect on the importance of Father’s Day. These themes resonate deeply with our ongoing series, "Chronicles of a Death Doula," where we continue to delve into legacies, mental health, and the compassionate support we can offer each other.
A Journey of Resilience and Renewal
Last month, we asked: What legacies are we building today? We drew inspiration from those who teach, heal, and create—transforming their adversities into powerful legacies. This brings us to the events of this month and some profound experiences and lessons that came with it.
Father's Day Ride: A Tale of Resilience
Yesterday, on Father’s Day, I had the profound honor of riding over 200 miles alongside a group of diverse motorcycle enthusiasts on the roads of Connecticut. Among us was a father who, having recently endured the heartrending loss of his 17-year-old son in a motorcycle accident, had planned to ride with another group of friends who, unfortunately, didn't show. Observing this stranger's solitude and recognizing his courage, we invited him to join us.
Despite his profound grief, this brave father of three, a rider since he was 17, exemplified incredible strength by showing up, riding for part of our ride, and then choosing to ride through his sorrow alone. His story resonated deeply with us all, embodying the resilience and courage we admire and strive to foster in every aspect of life, whether at work or at play.
Empowering Men’s Mental Health
In recognition of Men’s Mental Health Month, I had the opportunity to speak with Jason Wendroff Ronicki, a yoga instructor and energy healer, who shared his personal journey with grief and mental health. Jason's story began with the loss of his sister in a car accident and his subsequent struggle to integrate this grief into his identity. He discovered the transformative power of yoga, meditation, and personal development, which helped him cope with his grief and eventually led him to help others.

"So much of the grief world is focused on, 'Oh, let's talk about what we're thinking and what we're feeling.' But you have to add the body into it." - Jason Wendroff-Rawnicki
Did you know that over 60% of men who experience significant grief report physical symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, and muscle tension? This stat underscores the need for incorporating physical movement into our healing processes.
Whether it's yoga, kickboxing, or simply walking in nature, moving our bodies can release trapped emotions and promote mental well-being.
Upcoming Presentation: Unleashing Resilience in HR
This experience ties closely to the themes of my upcoming presentation at the Southern CT SHRM HR Professional Development Summit and Law Symposium at UConn Stamford, CT, on August 6th. In my talk, "Unleashed: Hostage to Hero — Navigating the Modern HR Landscape with Innovation, Multigenerational Synergy, and Inclusive Cultures," I will explore how personal challenges can catalyze growth and innovation within HR.
Like the father who led himself through his grief on Father's Day, HR leaders are called to guide their teams through challenges with empathy and resilience. Join me as we discuss transforming adversity into opportunity and building inclusive cultures that empower every member of our organizations.
