Themes of Control, Belonging, and Growth for Women Entrepreneurs Over 50

You'll notice my past few posts and newsletters have been about dreams. Literally dreaming - how it can inform us of what's going on in our own subconscious and how to interprety it. (Check out my post on using AI for dream interpretation.)

As I was doing yet another dream interpretation, it occured to me that themes, images, and feelings I was experiencing might ring true for other women over 50 stepping into entrepreneurship too.

I won't bore you with the details of the dream itself - but let's see if some of the recurring themes ring true for you too!

1. Control and Adaptation

As you launch your business or pivot into a new venture, you may feel like you've "lost your saddle"—that sense of control or stability you once had. Traditional approaches may feel safe but burdensome, while new and creative solutions can be both freeing and uncertain.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where in my business or life do I feel like I’ve “lost control”?
  • Am I clinging to outdated methods, and what lighter, more innovative solutions can I explore?

Next Steps:

  • Identify one area of your work where you feel stuck and brainstorm creative ways to make it more manageable.
  • Try one new tool, method, or system this month to lighten your workload—something that aligns with your values and goals.

2. Belonging and Validation

Stepping away from traditional roles often means stepping into spaces where validation doesn’t come easily. You may feel scrutinized or unsure whether your ideas, work, or presence will resonate. Finding belonging, however, starts with aligning with the right people and communities.

Reflection Questions:

  • Who or what represents the other people in my life?
  • Am I seeking acceptance from the wrong places, or am I on the right path?

Next Steps:

  • Focus on networking with individuals and groups that genuinely support your values and vision.
  • Celebrate your wins, even if they’re small, and recognize that not everyone’s approval is necessary for your success.

3. Overcoming Challenges

Every entrepreneur faces moments of feeling stuck. These roadblocks can feel overwhelming, but they’re often opportunities to flex your problem-solving skills and build resilience.

Reflection Questions:

  • What areas of my life or work feel “stuck in the mud”?
  • What resources or actions can help me free myself or my passions?

Next Steps:

  • Identify one major challenge you're facing and break it into smaller, actionable steps.
  • Seek support—whether from a coach, mastermind group, or trusted friend—to brainstorm solutions and stay accountable.

4. Facing Fears

Starting something new or stepping into the unknown often stirs up fear. Whether it’s fear of failure, judgment, or even success, these emotions can feel as intimidating. But courage grows with action.

Reflection Questions:

  • What fears are currently holding me back, and how can I face them with courage?
  • How am I amplifying challenges in my mind, and how can I see them with more perspective?

Next Steps:

  • Take one small step toward something that scares you—whether it’s launching your website, speaking publicly, or asking for help.
  • Write a list of the worst-case scenarios and how you’d handle them. Then, write the best-case scenarios to remind yourself of the possibilities. PS - my Countess Code journal is BUILT for that!

5. Trusting Resilience

Your ability to free yourself or adapt to challenging situations, and find creative solutions reflects your inner strength and resourcefulness. Every setback is a chance to grow and prove to yourself that you are capable of navigating this journey.

Reflection Questions:

  • How have I overcome challenges in the past, and what lessons can I apply now?
  • What can I do to build trust in my resilience and capabilities?

Next Steps:

  • Celebrate your past wins—write them down and revisit them whenever you feel doubt creeping in.
  • Commit to small, consistent actions that align with your larger goals, building momentum and confidence.

Practical Takeaways for Women Entrepreneurs Over 50

  1. Embrace Change and Creativity Let go of outdated approaches that feel heavy and burdensome. Seek innovative solutions that energize you and align with your values.
  2. Trust Your Resilience You’ve overcome obstacles before, and you can do it again. Trust in your ability to persist and adapt.
  3. Seek Belonging Where It Counts Focus on finding communities and networks that resonate with your mission. Surround yourself with those who support and inspire you.
  4. Face Challenges with Perspective Fears and setbacks often feel larger than they are. Take a step back, breathe, and remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

Your Journey Ahead

The path can often feel as vast and unpredictable as a dream. Like the symbols in many vivid dreams, your experiences and challenges often carry deep meaning. Whether it's reclaiming control, finding belonging, or overcoming fears, your entrepreneurial journey holds powerful lessons.

The themes of control, belonging, resilience, and fear often appear in dreams—and in life—because they’re universal. But for women over 50 entering entrepreneurship, these themes can feel especially poignant. You’re forging a new path, creating a legacy, and proving that reinvention is not only possible but powerful.

By reflecting on these themes and taking intentional steps, you’ll continue to grow, thrive, and inspire others along the way.

Oh... great topic. So, according to my dream last night, I think I need to do some cleaning up (I was walking through a very messy house that I didn't recognize...). Perhaps it's telling me to get rid of what doesn't serve me anymore? ??

Always insightful, Viveka von Rosen! I'm a firm believer that when we quiet our minds our truest desires come out to play, especially when we are in a state of deep sleep. (Another reason I focus so heavily on sleep in my work.) Our dreams are beautiful vehicles to help us find what truly drives us at our head, heart, and gut levels.
