Throughout my career, I've dealt with anxiety and burnout just like everyone else. My path hasn't exactly been linear —it’s been full of twists, turns, and challenges.?
With each new hurdle came a risk of anxiety and burnout, but I also learned some valuable lessons along the way.?
My hope is that?sharing my experiences and insights can help you on your job search journey.
Set Realistic Expectations?
One of the primary sources of frustration is when reality doesn't align with our expectations. To mitigate this, it's essential to establish realistic benchmarks from the start.?
The best way is by taking a step back to assess what's achievable and aligning your goals accordingly.
Research industry standards to understand the average time it takes to receive responses, get interview requests, and ultimately land a job.
If you're not sure what your benchmarks are, consider reaching out to a career coach, mentor or recruiter who can help you set realistic expectations. They'll be able to provide insight into what it takes to succeed in your job search and help you set realistic goals.
Allocate Your Energy Effectively
Managing your energy is just as crucial as managing your time.?
Focus on high-impact activities that align with your job search goals. Start your day by tackling the tasks that require the most concentration and creativity when your energy levels are at their peak.?
Reserve less demanding activities for times when your energy dips.?
Use a Job Search Framework
Adopting a structured approach to your job search can be incredibly beneficial. Consider methodologies like the 5:50:5 method:?
This framework helps break down your activities into manageable chunks and establishes boundaries for when you’ve done enough for the day and helps to avoid the temptation to work late into the night.
You might also find using an application tracker useful to alleviate some pressures and to help you stay organized. I talk about how to do that in this newsletter.
Prioritize 'Me' Time
Talking about boundaries, it’s crucial to identify and commit to non-negotiable personal time.?
Allowing every waking moment to be consumed by your job search is neither healthy nor sustainable. Schedule regular breaks away from job search activities, allowing your mind and body to recharge and actually take the breaks.
Unplug Fully When Needed
I know the thought of taking a break can feel daunting, especially with that internal voice insisting you’re wasting precious time.?
But neglecting self-care opens the door for burnout. Allow yourself to unplug completely when needed. Taking a step back is crucial for maintaining long-term focus and resilience.
Remember, the journey to finding the right job is exactly that—a journey. By setting realistic expectations, managing your energy strategically, following a structured job search framework, and prioritizing personal time, you can navigate job search anxiety and burnout with greater ease. Take care of yourselves out there, and happy job hunting!
