Navigating the Global Landscape: Thoughts on attending international conferences

As a seasoned consultant with extensive experience working globally and engaging with diverse stakeholders, I've witnessed firsthand the dynamic interplay of ideas and interests at international conferences, such as the current COP28. Whilst we can question the lasting value of these gatherings, there is the opportunity for progress, although in my view, the most effective global meetings take place away from the media pressures. On the plus side, they can foster collaboration, but they also present unique challenges. Let's have a look at the benefits and pitfalls of participating in these global forums.

Benefits:

  1. Global Collaboration: International conferences do provide a platform for nations to come together, fostering opportunities for collaboration on shared challenges.
  2. Knowledge Exchange: Conferences facilitate the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and innovations. Engaging with global leaders allows consultants, organisational leaders and policy makers to stay at the forefront of industry trends, bringing valuable insights back to their clients and businesses
  3. Networking Opportunities: Building relationships with diverse stakeholders is an area I have touched on recently, it is not easy, but by networking (particularly face to face) deeper relationships can be built.
  4. Policy Influence: Depending on accessibility, if participants are drawn from a wide ecosystem, a greater range of opinions and perspectives can be shared and hopefully with this direct involvement, can lead to positive changes in international frameworks and agreements.

Pitfalls:

  1. Complex Stakeholder Dynamics: Navigating the intricate web of international politics and diverse stakeholder interests can be challenging.
  2. Implementation Gaps: While conferences produce ambitious agreements, the challenge lies in translating these commitments into concrete actions. Participants often face the hurdle of ensuring that the strategies discussed at conferences are effectively implemented on a global scale.
  3. Information Overload: The sheer volume of information exchanged at these events can be overwhelming. Participants must possess the ability to distill complex information into actionable insights for their clients and colleagues
  4. Sustainability Concerns: The environmental impact of hosting large-scale conferences is a growing concern. As a consultant with a global perspective, I feel it is essential to be mindful of the ecological footprint of these events and advocate for sustainable practices.

? I know that many here will have attended COP28 and returned from Dubai, what are your perspectives on the benefits and pitfalls of attending?
