I was recently invited to speak about #generationz and how communities can effectively deal with this generation. After careful consideration, I have summarized some key insights and best practices that can be implemented by communities to engage and support Generation Z (#gz )
Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is the latest generation to enter the workforce and interact with society. These individuals are digital natives who grew up with smartphones, social media, and the internet. With a unique set of values, preferences, and experiences, Generation Z requires a different approach to community engagement. In this short article, I will discuss some of the best practices for communities to deal with Generation Z.
First and foremost, it is essential to understand that Generation Z values authenticity, transparency, and honesty. This generation is known for being skeptical of marketing gimmicks and advertising ploys. Communities should focus on building trust with Generation Z by being transparent about their goals, objectives, and initiatives. It is important to communicate clearly and honestly with this generation to avoid misunderstandings.
Another best practice for communities to deal with Generation Z is to embrace digital communication. This generation prefers to communicate through social media, texting, and instant messaging. Therefore, communities should invest in building a strong online presence that is engaging, informative, and interactive. Communities can use social media to share information about events, news, and initiatives while also inviting feedback and suggestions from the public. This not only helps to connect with Generation Z but also increases engagement and participation from the community.
Furthermore, communities should consider involving Generation Z in decision-making processes. This generation values inclusivity, diversity, and equity. Therefore, communities should create opportunities for Generation Z to voice their opinions and ideas. This could be done through town hall meetings, focus groups, or online surveys. By involving Generation Z in decision-making processes, communities can ensure that their initiatives align with the needs and preferences of this generation.
