Navigating the Game Industry Jungle: From Rookie to Pro
So, you've got a burning passion for games and a desire to make a career out of it? Welcome to the club! The games industry is an exciting and dynamic field, but let's not sugarcoat it—breaking into this world as a rookie can be a daunting task. Most entry roles still request a certain level of experience, which makes it hard for true beginners to join the industry. However, armed with determination, perseverance, and a solid strategy, you can overcome the challenges, sidestep the prejudices, and pave your way towards your dream job in the games industry. And remember: every skill and experience you have may be transferrable and can give you an advantage.
I felt the urge to write this article because I had to go through a lot of what I see other people suffering with nowadays. I started in this industry with no experience in game business or development and an inexistent network of contacts (in games). My experience was thoroughly in other creative industries, and I have never been involved in any game development projects until I decided to create my own game. But I never allowed it to stop me. To be honest, it never even crossed my mind that it wouldn’t be possible. And when the project was a flop, truly unsuccessful, I just saw it as lessons learnt and moved on, not allowing any doubt to stop me. So I thought I would share a bit of what I know and experienced here.
As a rookie, you'll encounter various pitfalls and challenges along the way. One of the primary hurdles you may face is the lack of experience. It's natural to lack professional experience in the games industry, which can make it difficult to secure your first job. Many employers seek candidates with a proven track record. Additionally, the games industry attracts countless talented individuals, intensifying the competition for entry-level positions. Standing out from the crowd can be challenging. Furthermore, building connections and a professional network is vital in any industry, and the games industry is no different. However, as a newcomer, you may lack connections that could open doors for you.
With the technology advances, it has become easier to develop a game even without a team or previous knowledge. Try to create a portfolio, even if not commercial, that will showcase your talents and demonstrate you have what it takes to perform in a team. Another option is to volunteer to support indie or social projects. I know it is not ideal to work without remuneration, but as long as you have other outcomes from your efforts, and it is not just a company taking advantage of your work, it is acceptable. Additionally, use a vocabulary that allows you to translate your experience in other fields as interesting skills for your new career in games. I know it is hard to sell yourself, but work on having a positive and constructive view of what you know and what you can do.
Unfortunately, prejudice and stereotypes can further complicate your journey. Some may believe that having an extensive gaming background automatically qualifies you for a job in the industry. However, gaming skills alone do not determine professional competence. Moreover, the games industry has faced issues related to diversity. Stereotypes and biases can hinder opportunities for talented individuals from underrepresented groups. But this is being improved, even though it is a work in progress, and you shouldn’t allow it to hinder your progress. There are tons of companies who would love to hear from you. And you may always become the catalyst of change.
To overcome these difficulties, it's crucial to adopt effective strategies. While formal education is valuable, gaining practical experience through personal projects, internships, or volunteer work can help you build a portfolio that showcases your skills and passion. Employers appreciate candidates who have real-world experience and can demonstrate their abilities. Additionally, networking and mentorship play significant roles in your career growth. Attend industry events, join online communities, and engage with professionals in the field. Seek mentorship from experienced individuals who can provide guidance and open doors for you. There are many people in this industry who are willing and open to welcome new talents and support them as well as they can. I won't lie to you: it will still be hard. But it will be worth it.
Furthermore, diversifying your skill set can make you a more versatile candidate. While it's great to specialize in one area of game development, learning about different aspects such as programming, design, art, or production can broaden your opportunities. Employers often value candidates who have a well-rounded understanding of the industry. You don’t need to be an expert on it all, but show interest and curiosity always helps. Finally, always show your passion and commitment. Stay updated on industry trends, contribute to relevant discussions, and showcase your dedication through personal projects. Employers appreciate candidates who demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for the industry.
Breaking down prejudice and stereotypes requires proactive steps. During interviews and on your resume, emphasize your skills, accomplishments, and personal projects. By highlighting your relevant experience and capabilities, you can challenge any preconceived notions. Additionally, you can contribute to diversity and inclusion within the games industry. Participate in initiatives, support underrepresented developers, and highlight the importance of diverse perspectives in game development. By taking action, you can help create a more inclusive industry for everyone. Be an influencer of positive changes.
And remember to pay forward. Once you achieve your goals and start an exciting career, support others going through the hurdle. Share what you learnt, make introductions, mentor others. Let’s create a collaborative environment together.
I know it is not a secret recipe for success and you probably already read about it elsewhere, but it is so easy to fall into negativity and just blame the industry for it all, seeing it as a closed club nobody broke into. But the truth is that there are always loopholes you can explore and even create yourself, so don’t let the challenges stop you from achieving your dreams. Afterall, thinking outside the box and breaking stereotypes are the basis for the gaming industry as a whole.
In conclusion, joining the games industry as a rookie may have its fair share of challenges, but don't let that discourage you. By gaining experience, networking, diversifying your skill set, and proving your passion and commitment, you can overcome these hurdles and make your mark in the industry. Remember, persistence and determination are key. With the right mindset and a proactive approach, you can turn your dream job in the games industry into a reality. So, power up and level up your career today!
