Navigating the Future with Key Insights

BC Tech’s latest Funding & Finance webinar, featuring Daniel Lee of CIBC, tackled the most pressing topics in the tech market, including insights from 2024, the Rule of X as a key valuation driver, the demand and supply imbalance of VC dollars, and the 2025 outlook.

AI Dominance in 2024

2024 was the year of AI dominance, with the “Mag Seven” stocks leading market growth. Lee emphasized, “The S&P was up about 24%, driven largely by seven stocks we called the Mag Seven,” highlighting the influence of AI-powered companies. Software, however, faced slower growth due to demand normalization and budget reallocations, though profitability reached new highs. “Software companies are more profitable than ever, with EBITDA margins hitting roughly 21%,” Lee added, attributing this to increased operational efficiencies.

The Rise of the Rule of X

The emergence of the Rule of X as a valuation driver signals a shift in investor priorities. Lee explained, “The Rule of X has replaced the Rule of 40, focusing more on growth than profitability,” underscoring that companies demonstrating strong growth trajectories are being rewarded with higher valuation multiples. This shift highlights the competitive advantage for high-growth companies in the tech sector.

Venture Funding Challenges and Opportunities

Venture funding challenges persisted due to a lack of exits, with Lee noting, “There are 2.7 times more demand than supply for VC funding in later-stage companies.” The scarcity of exits from 2022 to 2024 left many venture capitalists hesitant to invest, creating a bottleneck in funding. However, Lee pointed to signs of optimism for 2025, mentioning a growing pipeline of IPO-ready companies and an uptick in M&A activity. “We’re seeing more inbounds from companies exploring M&A, driven by strong balance sheets and growth strategies,” he said.

The Role of Private Equity in 2025

Private equity firms, holding $2.6 trillion in dry powder, are poised to play a significant role in the 2025 tech market. “They’ve become more aggressive in paying market-clearing prices,” Lee highlighted, noting that reduced take-private opportunities have prompted firms to pursue new investments. Additionally, potential regulatory leniency under the Trump administration could foster increased M&A activity, particularly among big tech companies.
