One of the most challenging situations is distinguishing between workplace politics and workplace harassment. Both can create uncomfortable environments, but they’re not the same, and understanding the difference is crucial for fostering a healthy and productive work atmosphere.
Difference: Politics vs. Harassment
Workplace Politics is like navigating a complex game of chess. It involves making strategic moves, forming alliances, and using relationships to advance one’s career. This might include:
While workplace politics can be frustrating and feel unfair, it’s generally self-serving about advancing oneself professionally, not directly harming others and can be managed with effective communication.
Workplace Harassment, on the other hand, is much more serious and crosses a critical boundary. It involves actions or words that create a hostile or intimidating environment. It involves behaviors or comments that create an environment of fear, humiliation, or hostility. it isn’t just about making the workplace uncomfortable—it’s about actively undermining an individual’s dignity and sense of safety. This can manifest in several damaging ways:
Harassment involves deliberate actions meant to diminish someone's sense of security and respect within the workplace. It’s harmful and violates the principles of a safe and respectful work environment, requiring immediate and formal action to address and resolve.
