Navigating the Ethical Challenges of Emerging Technologies
Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT), are rapidly changing the world around us. However, with the increasing use of these technologies, there also comes a need to examine the ethical considerations that arise from their development and use. This past week news broke that Geoffrey Hinton who is considered the “Godfather of AI” recently resigned from Google to speak out regarding the dangers of the technology he helped build.
Hinton’s pioneering work on neural networks shaped artificial intelligence systems powering many of today’s products. He worked part-time at Google for a decade on the tech giant’s AI development efforts, but he has since come to have concerns about the technology and his role in advancing it.
Geoffrey Hinton is the latest high profile voice who is raising alarm at the speed to which we are developing and releasing these technologies and the concern with lack of oversight, transparency and how this technology can affect future generations. This past March, the Future of Life Institute, a nonprofit backed by Elon Musk published an open letter asking for a pause on the technology giving a chance for policy and law makers a chance to catch up. At first I was cynical and thought it was a strategic attempt to slow OpenAI with dominating the market. However when Geoffrey Hinton came forward it caused me to pause and dig deeper. In this article I’ll cover the ethical concerns that emerging technologies present and what we can do to mitigate risk.

One of the most significant ethical concerns associated with emerging technologies is privacy. As these technologies collect and analyze vast amounts of data, it's important to consider the potential for misuse or abuse of this information. In addition, data breaches and cyber attacks can have severe consequences, including identity theft and financial loss. To address these concerns, governments, businesses, and individuals must prioritize the protection of personal information, and consider how to maintain data security and privacy throughout the development and adoption of these technologies.

Is Elon really going to take AI out of the Tesla (car or factories). As for ethics, is that ever a reality when we all government oversight, laws, or controls?
