Navigating Early Recovery During the Holidays
Written By Michael Genovese, M.D., J.D.
The holidays can be a joyful yet challenging time, especially for individuals in early recovery from alcohol or substance use disorders. At Ascendant, we see firsthand how the season’s gatherings and traditions can bring both comfort and tension. For those new to recovery, navigating family interactions during this time requires preparation and support.
For patients, setting boundaries is key. Declining events where alcohol or other substances will be present is an act of self-care, not avoidance. Having a plan in place—such as attending with a sober support system or scheduling a check-in with a sponsor—can provide stability in potentially triggering situations. Open and honest communication about recovery goals with trusted family members can also foster understanding and reduce misunderstandings.
For families, education is vital. Learning about addiction and recovery can help temper expectations and foster empathy. Avoid pressuring the individual to engage in traditions that may feel overwhelming. Instead, focus on creating a supportive environment by offering non-alcoholic alternatives and respecting boundaries.
At Ascendant New York, we emphasize that recovery is a family journey. The holidays can be an opportunity for healing and connection when approached with mutual respect and understanding.
