Navigating the Digital Product Passport Landscape

Key Insights and Best Practices

Hi there,

We are excited to present our latest newsletter on navigating the Digital Product Passport landscape.

As a traceability software company committed to supporting businesses like yours, we are dedicated to providing you with valuable information and practical guidance in this evolving landscape.

In this newsletter, we will dive into the complexities of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) and offer you a range of key insights and best practices to navigate the journey successfully. Here's a glimpse of what you can expect:

  • Understanding DPP requirements: What information will be required?
  • How can a traceability system help in regulatory compliance?
  • Data standardization for enhanced interoperability

What information will be included in a DPP?

Currently, the data requirements that a digital product passport will need to contain are still being determined. These requirements will also depend on the individual product category and specific industry.

However, implementing a digital product passport will require the participation of the whole supply chain and defining the crucial information that will reduce product waste.

Although there isn’t a full list of requirements set by the European Commission yet, there are some data requirements determined already:

  • DPP should be connected through a data carrier to a unique product identifier

  • The data carrier (QR code, RFID), needs to be present on the product, on the packaging, or on product documentation
  • Both the data carrier and the unique product identifier should comply with standard (ISO/IEC) 15459:2015
  • The information included in the DPP should be based on open standards, be interoperable and machine-readable, structured, and searchable
  • The information should refer to the product model, batch, or item
  • The access to information included in the product passport shall be regulated in accordance with the essential requirements set out in Article 10, and the specific access rights at the product group level shall be identified in the applicable delegated act adopted pursuant to Article 4

Traceability for easier compliance with the DPP regulation

Leveraging a robust traceability solution can significantly help in the compliance process.

By implementing traceability software, businesses can efficiently collect, manage, share and analyze product data, ensuring seamless traceability across the supply chain. This enables organizations to meet the DPP requirements, such as data disclosure and product transparency.

Moreover, companies can use a traceability solution for the DPP implementation in the following ways:

  • Centralized data management - Traceability software serves as a centralized platform for managing product data required for DPPs. It enables businesses to collect, store, and organize product information, including details about origin, composition, manufacturing processes, and sustainability attributes. This centralized approach ensures data accuracy, consistency, and accessibility throughout the supply chain.
  • Real-time tracking and tracing - Traceability software allows businesses to track and trace products at every stage of the supply chain, from raw materials to the end consumer. By capturing and recording relevant data points, such as batch numbers, dates, and locations, the software provides a comprehensive view of product movements and enables quick identification of potential issues or recalls.
  • Integration with existing systems - Traceability software can seamlessly integrate with existing business systems, such as inventory management, ERP, or quality control systems. This integration ensures smooth data flow and eliminates the need for manual data entry or duplication. It also enhances operational efficiency by automating processes and reducing the risk of errors.
  • Compliance and audit readiness - Traceability software enables businesses to demonstrate compliance with DPP regulations by generating accurate and comprehensive reports on product traceability and transparency. It streamlines the data disclosure process, making responding to regulatory requirements and audits easier. This level of compliance satisfies regulatory obligations and enhances brand reputation and trust.

Data standardization for enhanced interoperability

Traceability solutions play a vital role in data standardization for enhanced interoperability. A traceability solution can help businesses standardize their product data by implementing consistent data formats, coding systems, and terminology across the supply chain.

This standardized approach ensures that product information is uniform and easily understood by all stakeholders involved in the DPP ecosystem.

Businesses can achieve enhanced interoperability by leveraging a traceability solution, enabling seamless information exchange between various systems and parties. This is particularly important in the context of DPP regulations, as DPP aims to establish a transparent and interconnected product traceability infrastructure.
