Navigating the Depths of Trauma: Insights from the Frontlines of PTSD Research from Santa Monica, California to Kyiv, Ukraine

As part of my lifelong quest to understand and heal trauma, my journey has taken me across continents, through varied cultures, and deep into the heart of human resilience. My research into the world of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been as much about exploring the outer world as it has been about delving into the inner landscapes of those affected by trauma. With over 25 years dedicated to researching trauma-informed relationship psychotherapy and the last 15 years integrating these principles and practices into Trauma-informed XR Therapy and spatial computing for the Metaverse, my work has continually evolved to meet the complex needs of those living with trauma.
My early years were spent in the Philippines, where, in my 20s, I immersed myself in understanding the context of trauma within a culture vastly different from my own. This foundational experience set the stage for my future endeavors, highlighting the importance of context in trauma therapy. It was here that I began to see the universality of trauma, as well as the specific cultural nuances that shape its expression and healing.
Nearly four years ago, I moved the BondFire Project Trauma-informed XR Therapy to Kyiv, Ukraine, a decision driven by my desire to understand trauma in cultures where war is a chronic part of life. The impact of continuous conflict on the Ukrainian people was immediately apparent – the trauma was visible not just in stories but etched on the faces and bodies of those I met. Visiting and partnering with local mental health hospitals for Ukrainian military and veterans, I embarked on a project that would challenge and deepen my understanding of trauma.
What I discovered in Ukraine was both heartbreaking and illuminating. The onset of the war, particularly the violent attacks on Kyiv on February 24, 2022, marked a profound escalation of trauma for the Ukrainian people. The symptoms of PTSD were pervasive, with the trauma of war leaving deep scars on the psyche and soul of the nation.
In response, my team and I leveraged trauma-informed skills, such as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and Tapping Solutions, started up an Art for Kids in the deep underground Metro Stations used as bomb shelters and bunkers throughout Kyiv, created a BondFire Project staging facility for first responders and refugees to get support, started a English Program to help homeless and displaced refugees learn English Skills to write resumes and interviewing, raised money for students to buy computers for online education and raised money to transport a 9-year-old Ukrainian boy who needed urgent ongoing treatment for Stage 4 cancer, to offer some relief to those impacted by war, loss and displacement. Traveling through the country, we witnessed firsthand the immense pain, betrayal, and chronic stress that war inflicts on individuals and communities. This experience underscored the urgent need for innovative, effective therapeutic interventions.
My latest research on PTSD in Ukraine underscores the scale of the challenge. The condition remains widespread, exacerbated by ongoing conflict and displacement. Studies indicate that prolonged exposure to war significantly increases the risk of PTSD, with many Ukrainians experiencing symptoms such as flashbacks, severe anxiety, and insomnia. Moreover, the societal impact of war has strained existing mental health services, making accessible and effective treatment more critical than ever.
Now residing in Nice, France, my work continues. The current research and development of trauma-informed XR Therapy for the Metaverse represents the next frontier in our efforts to address the global mental health crisis. By leveraging the immersive power of spatial computing, we aim to create a safe, accessible space for healing that transcends geographical and cultural barriers.
As we seek like minded collaborators, creators, investors who share our conviction in this transformative approach, our mission remains clear: to harness technology's potential to heal and connect, offering hope and support to those profoundly impacted by trauma. The journey is far from over, but together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of those who have endured the unimaginable.
