NAVIGATING THE DEPTHS OF DEPRESSION AMONG TEENS: UNRAVELING THE LAYERS OF COMPLEXITY AND IMPLEMENTING A TREATMENT APPROACH

The presentation explores adolescent depression as a critical mental health concern, emphasizing its prevalence and the need for a comprehensive understanding and effective treatment interventions. Dr. Mazzella plans to integrate multiple frameworks through detailed clinical examples. The theoretical background includes insights from contemporary object relations theory which is based on a model of shame, humiliation, and rage. The presentation will include a clinical example of a student facing rejection, showcasing the emotional turmoil and negative self-perception experienced by adolescents. The interventions demonstrate the importance of guiding individuals from dysregulated to regulated states, facilitating verbal reflection, and helping them transform undigested emotional experiences into cohesive thoughts. The transformative journey is described as a shift from a state of confusion and despair to clarity and insight, illustrating the value of integration to alleviate depressive symptoms. ??

Learning objectives: Participants will: 1) be able to comprehend the prevalence and significance of adolescent depression as a critical mental health issue and the need for effective treatment interventions, 2) be able to describe and apply the concepts from contemporary object relations theory, particularly focusing on models of shame, humiliation, and rage, and 3) gain familiarity with intervention techniques that guide depressed adolescents from dysregulated emotional states to regulated ones.?
