Navigating Cultural Nuances in the Tech Industry

Introducing A Tale of Two Cultures

Imagine landing in a new country, not just to explore its streets and cuisines but to dive into its tech world. That was me, arriving in the UK with a heart full of dreams and a suitcase full of gadgets. One of the AiBnB we stayed was at the heart of Newcastle in Central station where the people never sleep. It’s like I was in a different planet. Music nonstop till morning. This gave me a mental shift that I needed to understand my new environment.

I quickly learned that understanding the cultural nuances in tech was like learning a new language, crucial for thriving in this diverse and dynamic landscape.

My first tech meet-up in Newcastle was an eye-opener — different accents, practices, and professional etiquettes, all coming together in a vibrant tech scene.

The experience was eye-opening. There was an unspoken language of customs, gestures, and expressions that varied vastly from what I was accustomed to back home.

This new chapter wasn't just about learning new tech; it was about understanding the cultural nuances that could make or break my success in this industry.

The Cultural Fabric of Tech

The tech industry isn't just about gadgets and code; it's also about people from different backgrounds coming together to innovate. Each culture adds its own colour to the fabric, creating a rich, diverse drapes that's vibrant and ever-evolving.

Pro Tip 1: Learning the Unwritten Rules

Every tech community has its own set of unwritten rules – the dos and don'ts that govern interactions. In the UK, it might be the understated approach to self-promotion or the subtle art of the tea break that brings colleagues together.

Adaptability to Culture: The Result of a Poll

Poll Result
Adaptability to work culture stands tall in managing a new working environment.

A recent poll revealed that adaptability to work culture is a game-changer in new environments.

The question is: How have you adapted to different tech cultures? Share your experiences!

Pro Tip 2: Communication Styles

From the directness of an American pitch to the more reserved British presentation, understanding these styles is crucial. It's about syncing your communication rhythm to the beat of the local tech scene.

For example:

The first thing I noticed was a drastic opposite from the bluntness of the Dutch’s. In my experience working in the Netherlands, they do not mice their words, in a meeting one of the designers told the CEO that hole wasn’t making sense and my jaw dropped, to the politically correctness of the British. While in any meeting no one said you are wrong or no.

Someone pseudo name, Michele was presenting a case and another person say Jake completely got it wrong and said something completely different, rather than correcting the notion, Michele affirms Jake saying you are right but: that happened a lot then I quickly realized: oh! you don’t cut people off or talk directly as the Dutch. ????

Cultural Exchange: Share Your Stories

My first experience in Netherlands and I had to do a presentation was to share about the rich culture of Nigeria. It was such an interesting moment and the take away was shocking because most of the audience wanted to go the Northern part of Nigeria after sharing the different cultures in Nigeria. This was ironical because I as a Nigerian wasn’t as enthused about going up North.

Okare Shaba, MBA You have done a great article from your practical experience. I wish many could understand and hear it. But who is listening? What is the African culture?
