Navigating the Corporate World as a Young Black Professional: Lessons from Des’s Journey
In today’s rapidly evolving corporate landscape, being a young Black professional comes with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. For many, stories of resilience and success from those who have walked a similar path offer vital inspiration. Des Massicott, CISSP, CEH , a seasoned professional in the tech industry working at RX as its Global Chief Cyber Security Officer, shared his journey at the recent BYP Network Leadership Conference, in London.? There he spoke about career growth, the importance of continuous learning, and the power of leveraging networks to succeed.??
A lifelong commitment to learning?
One of the key takeaways from Des’s story is his dedication to learning. This mindset became especially crucial during a major turning point in his career—the 2017 cyberattack launched against the NHS. While the crisis unfolded, Des’s in-depth knowledge of industry trends and his ability to adapt quickly positioned him as a standout professional, capable of navigating the organisation through troubled waters. Reflecting on this, he emphasises the importance of relentless learning.?
“You can’t stop learning. I was always learning, even when I didn’t follow the traditional path of university or college. I knew I had to fit in somewhere, and for me, that was technology.”
He encourages others to take advantage of the vast resources available, including platforms like YouTube, to continually upskill and stay relevant in their fields. His story illustrates that expertise and innovation often arise from self-directed learning and a hunger for knowledge. Continuing his voyage of learning Des has most recently been asked to join the esteemed Advisory Board for Infosecurity Europe 2025.? ? “As a member of the Advisory Board, I’ll be contributing to shaping a cutting-edge conference programme that addresses the most pressing challenges in cybersecurity. This is a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with industry leaders, share insights, and help drive the future of information security.”?
The power of allyship and networks in career advancement?
Beyond individual skill-building, Des underscores the critical role that community and allyship played in his rise from a young boy growing up in North West London to becoming a C-Suite executive. In a world where connections matter, Des learned early on to leverage relationships to create opportunities.?
“Don’t just look upwards—look left and right,”
Des advises, stressing the importance of building peer networks and finding allies who support your vision. For Des, allyship meant being surrounded by people who could open doors, including key decision-makers like CFOs and CEOs. These relationships, combined with his technical expertise, provided a platform for him to excel in his career. He encourages young Black professionals to cultivate meaningful connections that not only provide guidance but can also champion their growth.?
Trends versus fads: A cybersecurity leader's perspective?
In the fast-paced world of technology, distinguishing between fleeting trends and long-term industry shifts is essential. For Des, this discernment is especially critical in his role as a cybersecurity leader. He sees his responsibility as protecting not only the technology but also the people within our organisation, emphasising the need for a strong, adaptive approach to cybersecurity.?
“From a cyber perspective, there’s no such thing as a trend or a fad,” Des explains. “My role is to be the shield for RX, our organisation.” His ability to confidently differentiate between hype and genuine threats has enabled him to make sound decisions and avoid distractions that don’t serve the organisation’s mission.?
Building confidence and owning your path?
Des’s journey highlights the power of authenticity and self-assuredness. Despite external pressures and potential setbacks, his confidence in his skills and his unique perspective has allowed him to rise above challenges. His story serves as a reminder that embracing one’s identity and experiences can be a powerful tool in navigating the complexities of corporate life.?
“There will always be obstacles, but knowing your strengths and being true to yourself is how you turn those challenges into opportunities.”
His advice to young Black professionals is to embrace their individuality and use it as a foundation for building a successful career. Authenticity, combined with hard work and continuous growth, is what has set Des apart and allowed him to excel in a competitive industry.?
A blueprint for success?
Des’s experiences offer invaluable insights for young Black professionals seeking to carve out their own paths in the corporate world. His dedication to learning, the value he places on networks and allyship, and his ability to discern trends from fads are all lessons that resonate far beyond the tech industry. Des’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, adaptability, and self-confidence. For those looking to navigate their own careers, his story serves as both an inspiration and a practical guide—a reminder that success comes not just from following the road already paved but from forging your own path.?
