Navigating Corporate Restructuring

Navigating Corporate Restructuring

Restructures.

Just the word alone can bring a wave of emotions—uncertainty, sadness, frustration.

I’ve been there.

I remember the moment my region was heavily impacted by a restructuring. It felt like the ground beneath me had shifted, leaving me in a state of emotional chaos. I was torn between staying motionless, waiting for decisions to unfold, and an overwhelming urge to act. Watching colleagues leave and seeing lives turned upside down—it was hard to find clarity amid the turmoil.

Since I hear from my clients that many organizations are going through restructuring right now, I’ve been reflecting on my own experience. Looking back, I now see that even the most challenging moments hold hidden opportunities. I wish someone had shared this perspective with me back then. That’s why I want to offer two simple but powerful ways to navigate these moments of uncertainty with resilience and hope.

1. Reframe the Challenge

One of the most challenging shifts to make during difficult times is moving from “Why is this happening to me?” to “How might this be happening for me?”

Ask yourself this question:?What opportunities might it be creating if this restructuring was happening for me instead of to me?

At first, the answer may feel far out of reach. That’s okay. The power of this question lies in opening your mind to possibilities. Even in the fog of uncertainty, this perspective shift can help you regain a sense of agency.

This reframing doesn’t make the situation easier, but it begins to shift the narrative from one of loss to one of potential.

2. Reach Out for Support

During a restructuring, it’s easy to isolate yourself, feeling like you have to navigate the storm alone. But support is crucial.

Talk to a coach, mentor, trusted colleague, or friend. Share your feelings, ask for advice, or simply vent. Sometimes, having someone listen and offer an outside perspective can help you see options you hadn’t considered.

When I went through my own restructuring experience, I didn’t seek out support as much as I should have. If I had, I might have gained clarity and confidence faster. A coach, in particular, can be a game-changer in helping you identify opportunities and create an actionable plan forward.

A Final Thought

Restructures are undeniably tough, but they can also be transformative. By reframing the challenge and leaning on support, you can begin to see the path forward—even if it feels unclear at first.

What if this moment was an invitation to grow, pivot, or discover something new about yourself?

If you’re facing a restructuring, remember: you’re not alone. Take it one step at a time, and know that brighter days—and opportunities—are ahead.

I’d love to hear how you’ve navigated moments of professional uncertainty. Share your thoughts in the comments, and let’s support one another through change.

I particularly like this question by Lisa Madaschi: 'What opportunities (however, I would change the word to 'options') might it be creating if this restructuring was happening for me instead of to me?' I am not naturally overly optimistic, yet I strongly believe in reframing obstacles as options, experiments that challenge me to develop skills I haven't mastered yet.
