Navigating the Corporate Landscape in the age of AI: SOARing Beyond BANI and VUCA in the Era of Perma-Crisis
In the ever-evolving business landscape marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), traditional frameworks like VUCA and BANI have guided organizations in understanding and navigating the challenges of the dynamic world. However, as we move towards a future intertwined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and perpetual crisis, a new perspective is needed.
May I introduce "SOAR" – an uplifting acronym representing "Serenity, Open-mindedness, Adaptability, Renewal."
Let’s explore how the SOAR framework complements and extends the insights provided by BANI, and how organizations can cultivate a positive, transformative mindset to thrive in the era of Perma-Crisis.
Understanding BANI and VUCA:
BANI**, focusing on Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible aspects, delves into internal dynamics, providing a nuanced understanding of organizational challenges. VUCA*, on the other hand, emphasizes the external environment's volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Together, these frameworks have helped organizations build resilience and navigate through the uncertainties.
The Rise of Perma-Crisis: In today's reality of Perma-Crisis, where uncertainty is not an exception but the norm, a shift in mindset is imperative.
SOAR brings a positive perspective to the forefront, encouraging organizations to embrace change with serenity, open-mindedness, adaptability, and a commitment to renewal - today and for future generations.
Let's explore what my intentions of these acronyms inspired.
SOARing Beyond BANI and VUCA:
1.????? Serenity (Addressing Anxiety): In the face of internal and external uncertainties, cultivating serenity within the organization becomes crucial. Leaders must foster a culture of calmness, encouraging employees to approach challenges with a clear mind and a positive outlook.
2.????? Open-mindedness (Navigating Non-linearity): SOAR acknowledges the nonlinear nature of change and encourages open-mindedness. Organizations need to be flexible in their approaches, welcoming diverse perspectives, and fostering a culture that values innovation and creativity.
3.????? Adaptability (Countering Brittleness): As systems and structures face vulnerability, the ability to adapt becomes paramount. SOAR calls for an organizational mindset that embraces change, encourages learning, and is quick to adjust strategies in response to emerging challenges.
4.????? Renewal (Dealing with Incomprehensibility): In the face of incomprehensible situations, SOAR emphasizes renewal. Organizations should continuously reassess their strategies, invest in learning and development, and be willing to reinvent themselves to stay relevant in an ever-changing landscape with a mindset for next generations. Another word for Renewal is also regenerative – one of the most crucial facts in today’s world.
As we navigate the complexities of the business world demonstrated by the meaning of BANI and VUCA, the SOAR framework, I intent, introduces a refreshing and uplifting perspective - which is urgently needed in a world where 53% of teenagers have no hope in the future. By infusing serenity, open-mindedness, adaptability, and a commitment to renewal into organizational DNA, leaders can guide their teams through the challenges of Perma-Crisis and prepare them for the changes ahead driven by technologies acceleration. In the era of AI and constant transformation, adopting a positive and transformative mindset is not just an option – it's a strategic imperative for sustained success and growth.
And it all starts with our own leadership commitment and the focus within. Are we willing to hack and re-engineer how we see the world? Are we showing up solely with an expert and achiever mindset instead of embracing and exploring a new operating system within us as humans, business and society?
Leaders of today who are facing the challenges and opportunities of AI navigating a landscape were models and frameworks will not take us very far. Rather a shift in mindset towards a more regenerative future will secure not just the exponential growth of tech and profit, but rather the exponential rise of well-being of our planet, human race and also our economic system.
Might SOAR help us to hack a new way of leadership and living?
I am not an expert – even I am holding an 'extraordinary expert' status of the United States in Business Transformation – rather I see myself as an explorer, creator and connector to start this crucial and conscious expedition into the age of AI.

As a mother I am well aware about the fact of the ‘power of words’, the psychological impact of positive outlook and hope, combined with the importance of connecting strong roots with wings, that soar freely.
What do you think? Let’s SOAR together!

*VUCA: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity
VUCA, originally a military term, has found its way into the corporate lexicon as a way to describe the unpredictable and challenging nature of the business environment. Volatility refers to the speed and nature of change, uncertainty relates to the lack of predictability, complexity involves the multitude of factors at play, and ambiguity pertains to the lack of clarity in interpreting situations.
As organizations grapple with these elements, they must adopt agile strategies, promote a culture of adaptability, and develop leaders who can thrive in ambiguity. VUCA demands a proactive approach to change, encouraging organizations to anticipate disruptions and build resilience.
The agile mythology landscape with flat hierarchies and cross-functional collaboration found it’s path into the business landscape where waterfall leadership was not holding strong to the speed of change.

**The Rise of BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible)
In response to the limitations of VUCA, BANI has emerged as an alternative framework. BANI stands for Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible, providing a nuanced perspective on the challenges faced by organizations. While VUCA highlights external factors, BANI delves into the internal dynamics that can either support or hinder an organization's ability to navigate uncertainty.
Brittleness refers to the vulnerability of systems and structures, Anxious relates to the emotional state of individuals within the organization, Nonlinear acknowledges the unpredictable nature of change, and Incomprehensible points to the difficulty in making sense of complex situations. BANI emphasizes the importance of fostering organizational resilience, emotional intelligence, and the ability to embrace non-linear thinking.
The arising conversations on psychological safety and emotional intelligence plays a big role in making a BANI workforce possible. The focus on human development is a big part to live up to this model.
