Navigating Compliance and Patient Empowerment: Insights from Rina Newton

Welcome to the latest edition of our Cognitant Interview series, which explores engaging and empowering people about their health, with experts from the healthcare industry. In this edition, we have the privilege of talking to Rina Newton, a pharmacist by background with over 25 years of experience in healthcare compliance. Rina is the co-founder of Code Clarity and a fervent advocate for patient empowerment.

Alex: Rina, do you think patient empowerment is important in healthcare today?

Rina Newton: Absolutely. Beyond mere lip service, there's a growing recognition of how empowering patients not only benefits individuals but also resonates across society and healthcare systems. It's not just about ticking boxes; it's about recognising that empowered patients can become advocates for their own health and contribute positively to the broader healthcare landscape. By empowering people in the right way, with the right information, life science organisations can contribute towards improving health outcomes, whilst also building on trust, reputation, and credibility.

?Alex: How do you feel that the life sciences industry can support this? Does the ABPI Code act as a barrier to their involvement?

?Rina Newton: The ABPI Code, while focused on ensuring patient safety, can sometimes be perceived as a barrier to patient empowerment initiatives. However, it's crucial to understand that the Code is not intended to stifle innovation or patient-centric approaches. Rather, it provides a framework within which the industry can operate responsibly.

It's important that we embrace the lack of specific guidance as a positive and recognise that the Code is NOT saying “No”! By embracing the principles of the Code and seeking innovative ways to engage with patients, the life sciences industry can actively support patient empowerment without compromising on compliance.

Alex: What's your top advice for individuals or organisations looking to enhance their approach to patient engagement?

Rina Newton: Compliance is often cited as a significant challenge in patient engagement efforts. However, it's essential to confront these challenges head-on. Instead of viewing compliance as a barrier, see it as an opportunity to build trust and credibility.

Patients deserve better than avoiding the identification and management of risks; we should actively engage in these processes rather than opting for inaction. By debunking myths and facing compliance fears, organisations can develop robust patient engagement strategies that prioritise both patient well-being and regulatory adherence.

Alex: If you had a magic wand, what change would you make relating to patient empowerment or engagement that would accelerate progress?

Rina Newton: If I had a magic wand, I would ensure that regulatory bodies, such as the PMCPA, provide clear and positive guidance on compliant patient engagement. By offering tangible directives and best practices, regulatory bodies can alleviate uncertainties and empower organisations to innovate confidently in their patient engagement efforts.
