Navigating Complexity: Using Relationship Systems Intelligence in Delivery Teams

Delivery teams operate in a complex ecosystem, juggling multiple stakeholders, tight deadlines, and evolving project requirements. This intricate web of relationships can often lead to challenges, impacting team morale and project outcomes.

Understanding the System

A key challenge lies in understanding the interconnectedness of team members and their roles. Relationship Systems Intelligence (RSI) offers a powerful framework for examining these dynamics. By viewing the team as a system rather than a collection of individuals, we can identify patterns, dependencies, and potential areas of friction.

Common Relationship Challenges in Delivery Teams

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Teams often comprise members from different departments, each with their own goals and priorities. This can lead to misalignment and conflict.
  • Remote Work Dynamics: The shift to remote work has introduced new challenges in building trust, maintaining open communication, and managing virtual collaboration.
  • Client Expectations: Balancing the needs of the client with the team's capabilities can be challenging, especially when dealing with changing requirements.

Applying RSI to Overcome Challenges

  • Mapping the System: Visualising the team as a system can help identify key relationships, dependencies, and potential bottlenecks.
  • Open Communication: Creating a culture of open and honest communication is essential for building trust and addressing issues proactively.
  • Shared Goals and Vision: Aligning team members around a common purpose can foster collaboration and reduce conflicts.
  • Role Clarity: Defining clear roles and responsibilities can prevent misunderstandings and improve efficiency.
  • Conflict Resolution: Adopting a systemic approach to conflict can help identify underlying issues and find solutions that benefit the entire team.
  • Continuous Learning: Embracing a mindset of continuous learning and adaptation is crucial for navigating the complexities of project delivery.

The Role of the Coach

A Relationship Systems Coaching approach can play a pivotal role in helping delivery teams navigate these challenges. By facilitating open dialogue, identifying systemic patterns, and empowering team members, coaches can create a more harmonious and effective working environment.

  • Systemic Inquiry: Coaches can use questioning techniques to help teams explore the underlying dynamics of their relationships.
  • Building Trust: Creating a safe space for team members to share their perspectives and concerns is essential for building trust.
  • Conflict Resolution: Coaches can guide teams through conflict resolution processes, helping them find common ground and move forward.
  • Empowering Team Members: By focusing on the strengths and capabilities of each team member, coaches can help individuals contribute fully to the team's success.

By adopting a systems thinking approach and leveraging the power of coaching, delivery teams can enhance collaboration, improve problem-solving, and ultimately deliver successful projects.

As an Agile Coach and Agile Delivery Manager, after experiencing the ORSC Fundamentals, which is the equivalence of ORS @Work, I was inspired by the concept of systems thinking. Prioritising understanding the system's needs and wants, and then supporting teams in discovering their primary edges. By utilizing various ORSC tools, I facilitate their journey in overcoming these edges. I highly recommend this training.

One key aspect to truly unleash intelligence of the teams is to appreciate that they should not be just "delivery teams". When teams are considered and set up as "delivery", it implies that their job is to execute somebody else's thinking and decisions. There is no agency in that; we don't ask them to think, we ask them to do. Unless that changes, teams are positioned as the blue collars of the organisation. And the pressures of productivity, often mistaken for busy-ness, results in not having the time for much thinking. Over time, people relinquish their agency: "Just tell me what to do". The real change will only come when you change the come-from place and teams start being considered as much more than delivery ones.
