Navigating Cold Weather For Skin & Hair
Hello Gorgeous! We are in the thick of winter, and while there's nothing cozier than snuggling under a warm blanket with a cup of cocoa, our bodies might not feel the same joy. When you work on camera, your body is your brand and keeping it in year round tip top shape should be a priority. With temperatures dropping and heaters cranking up, many of us face the battle against dry skin, frizzy hair, and even those dreadful itchy throats. Let's chat about why this happens and, more importantly, what we can do to stay comfortable and vibrant all season!
The Cold Weather Conundrum: Challenges and Soloutions:
1. Dry, Flaky Skin and Itchy Scalp
So, let's face it: winter air is a moisture thief. And what's its favorite target? You guessed it—our skin! When the air is dry, the skin loses more water, leading to that flaky, uncomfortable feeling we all dread.
Let’s Fix It: Switch to a moisturizer that feels like your skin’s best friend. Look for products loaded with goodies like shea butter or jojoba oil. One of Christi Schreiber 's favorite is Aquaphor. It's super thick, so you don't need a lot. Put on your feet and hands and sleep with socks for the driest heels and hands. Sleep with a glob on your lips for the softest, supple lips (do this year round!). And hey, don’t forget about your scalp! Treat it to a weekly hair mask or oil massage to keep it hydrated and itch-free. Need a quick fix for dry scalp or dandruff? Selsun Blue is the best. You can even treat psoriasis any where on your body (or really dry skin patches) by using this as a mask, applying a thick layer on the area and leave on for 10-15 minutes!
2. Static and Frizzy Hair
If you’ve ever looked in the mirror on a cold morning and been greeted by Medusa-like strands sticking out everywhere, you know what I’m talking about. Static is the unwelcome guest that arrives with winter.
Combat the Crazy: First things first, ditch that old hairdryer for an ionic one—it’s a game changer. A leave-in conditioner will also be your hair’s best defense against static. Bonus tip: sleep on silk or satin pillowcases to keep that frizz at bay!
3. Nasal Passages, Throat, and Eye Irritations
Raise your hand if you’ve ever woken up with a dry throat or itchy eyes after a night with the heater on full blast. Yep, indoor heating might keep us warm, but it also dries out the air. This can really be challenging when your living depends on you communicating effectively and needing to see the teleprompter and deliver with a silky voice.
Breathe Easy: Time to bring in the big guns—a humidifier (you can also use a vaporizer for an expensive quick fix if you live in warmer climates with occasional cold spells). It helps keep the humidity at a comfortable level in your home, sleep with it on all night. Plus, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water works wonders. A little saline nasal spray can also offer some sweet relief for those tender nasal passages.
